Hello, I hope this is the right topic to ask, I'm having an issue and looking for the solution on google i ended on this thread.

I'm trying to add a .wav file to my mod which needs to be played everytime i hit somebody with my modded sword. The problem is that if I go to the 'music track' menu and add a new one and select 'single track', when I select my .wav file i get 'Invalid directory'. I've tried placing the file everywhere, \Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data, \Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data\Sounds, the Skyrim folder in My Documents, the Skyrim's root folder, a custom folder inside Skyrim's Data folder ... nothing worked, still getting the 'Invalid Directory' error.

In the first post you say

If you created the music folder in the correct location the path should already be set to that folder, so navigate to the file and click ok.

but which is the correct location? :D

This is giving me a bad headache

I Have been Having the same problem. I have uninstalled/Reinstalled CK nothing has worked. I;m annoyed as well. Some one please answer!!!

EDIT: I found the answer!!! YAY!

Good tutorial. Works perfectly for me.

For those having troubles, there are 2 things you might want to try. First off, make sure there are no spaces or special chars in the file names of your .wav files. nameyourfileslikethis.wav

And not sure if it will help, but try using Audacity to convert your wav files from your source.

I keep forgetting how to find the data folders. . . and I don't understand how to make music work in certain towns. I have a mod I'm making which announces very dramatic music during boss battles, although I only want them to happen during dragon battles, and Alduin's battle.

But that's not the most important part, I'm using special music for Winterhold, but I don't know how to localize it in the Winterhold village and College area. I also want to use very special music for the Sarthaal and Labrynthian areas.

In the location selection window, Select Tamerial and then find winterholdloction (there may be a few 01, 02 etc)

Right click on it and select "edit".

In the edit window, one of the tabs should say something regarding default music. Simply change this so that it points to your music (you'll have to set up your music tracts prior).

I'm generalising here, if you need more step to step approach, just ask.

Oh, well thank you. :D

I've gotten the Mysidia music from FFIV to work in the exterior area of Winterhold, in the tavern, and in the general good's store, as well as the house closest to the College. I think I put it in the jail too but I haven't checked. Unfortunately, I can't get the Winterhold music to work inside the Dorms, or any indoor area of the College, except the Midden, which I used a more recent, somber sounding track.

Check out those areas in the render window. It could be that they have default play music trigger boxes inside. If so, open up their script properties and point them to your track instead.

I have Tropical Skyrim installed and it changes a ton of things: Tundra into Desert, Northern Coast into and Oasis of some sort, and everything else into a Jungle. Now, I would like to know if it is possible to add a new music type or change the name of an already existing music type to match the location/climate change.

I'm thinking like this for the music types:

MUSExploreOasis (replaces the Northern Coast)

MUSExploreJungle (replaces the forests)

MUSExploreDesert (replaces the Tundra)

Same thing goes for the music tracks:

MUSExploreDesert01 etc... (you get the Idea)

I realise this is an old topic but since I came here to solve my current problem of the game crashing every time it goes to play one of my custom tracks as many people before me had, I thought I'd share my solution.

Firstly I was using this mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/13286/ so that I didn't have to mess with the SCK.

At first it was working fine with a number of songs that I tested it with that were already WAV files and it never crashed which was awesome.

Then as I started to use other songs that I had converted to WAVs myself it began crashing.

When I investigated I realised that the WAV files I already had vs the WAV files I had created were 16 bit depth vs 32 bit depth. So the software I had been using to convert the files with converted them to the highest possible setting.

When I changed them to 16 bit they began to work fine and the file size obviously decreased by half.

So it's either that they won't work at higher bit depths or it could be that it won't play files that are too big. (some of the tracks were over 100mb at 32 bit)

So anyway, that's how I solved my problem and now I'm able to enjoy my own custom soundtrack.

Hope this helps.
