Fallout 4 Inverts Colors Then Stops Running

During open world exploration my game will invert colors after 5-10m of exploring and will invert colors and freeze but the loading circle on the left will move for a bit until I get a notification that fallout has stopped running and I have to use task manager to close it. I have no clue what's causing this and will appreciate any help given. The temperatures for my CPU and GPU are perfectly fine and are usually below what most games would cause.

YOU LEFT OUT SOME VERY IMPORTANT INFORMATION...LIKE WHAT TYPE OF SYSTEM YOU ARE RUNNING THE GAME ON..

(CPU/RAM/GRAPHICS CARD ETC.. )

HAVE YOU MONITORED YOUR SYSTEM TEMPS AT ALL ??

HAVE YOU TRIED DISABLING GRAPHICS RELATED MODS/FILES LIKE THE ENB FOR EXAMPLE ?

ANY CHANCE YOUR MAIN DRIVE IS ALL MOST OUT OF ROOM AND DOESNT HAVE ENOUGH TO CACHE CAUSING TIME OUTS ?

BASICALLY ..

WITHOUT ENOUGH INFO ALL WE CAN DO IS SPECULATE

Ok ..

Seeing the specs its obvious you dont have a hardware resource issue..BUT...it could be a driver issue..(so keep that in mind).

Maybe a trial switch of drivers is recommended .

can you think of when it started to happen and maybe narrow down to what mods you may have installed or things you had changed at the time(settings, hardware, applications) ?

In situations like this the best thing is to "back track" and eliminate possible causes.

I just updated my graphics driver and have put fallout 4 into its beta mode and that seems to stop crashes for now.

Well it seems now that my game freezes in very flora heavy places or with certain weathers so I will un-install any flora mods and see if that fixes anything.

Don't put Fallout 4 in beta mode, please. Take it off. Not like it matters much, but just in case. Beta mode is a way to tell Steam that you are OK with being beta tester for next update. But while it feels like you are a great person for being first adopters ... it is generally bad ideas that most of your mods are unaware of new beta features. And mod authors will need time (especially when they are not paid) to update their mods. So beta mode will likely cause you a lot of trouble on the long run (if Bethesda decides to update their game once more). But I heard they will, they are trying to launch VR DLC.

Now it does look like your computer has power to handle a lot. My computer is sadly at some 3rd generation i5 with a GTX970 and 16Gb of DDR3 RAM. But it will not crash even I used the most intense flora mod (Regrowth I think). In some area FPS went down to 25fps though. So it is very likely that: your driver is still not playing nice with the game, or maybe CPU/GPU overheating and ... pray you don't have this.... some part of your RAM is damage, dying.

But you said the temp on CPU and GPU are fine. Then it is likely the other 2. What does dying RAM look like? RAM is a super fast storage (comparing to your hardrive) that CPU and GPU swap millions of numbers per nano second. But if CPU writes "123.45" and gets "123.99" back, that jacks up all the calculation. And sometimes, it gets back some garbage like "1DJ.E1" and your software has no idea how to calculate that number. Error in results start to spread quickly as a lot of calculations are dependent of each other. So you see the colors all get inverted and poop, crash. Software reaches a point it has errors on millions of calculations. And this likely happens at higher addresses in RAM. Normal computer operations like Netflix watching, web browsing.... is easy mode for computer. It doesn't know the higher ranged RAM is damage. But when you are in a game where the computer is asked to max out its potential, then yes, eventually it glosses over the damaged RAM area.

It can also be RAM (sticks on motherboard) or VRAM (part of the video card). How I would test? 16GB usually has 2 sticks. If you want to work with computer, pull out one of the stick. Just dont touch the gold plated part. The game should run fine with 8GB RAM (just more work, less FPS). If the game runs fine, then that stick you just pulled out has problem. If the game crashes even faster, then the stick you left inside is the bad one.

Hope it doesn't come to that. But there is no way to save the RAM if it goes bad. Once a small area goes bad, it is likely to spread very fast. Not some kind of infectious disease, but more like it reaches its max shelf life. For memory manufacture, if you make 100 chips, it is normal to have 5-10 chips fail. Or some other 5-10 chips only last 6 months, while other chips go on lasting 30 years. There are software that can mark all the bad segment of the RAM and tell Windows not to use those areas. But usually these software are available with memory design companies only. They are not hard to get, but were not designed for consumers so it was not the easiest to use, at all. If you can be sure a stick of memory is bad, best bet is just to buy a new one.
