Possible to Create Separate F:NV Installation?

Recommended Posts

Recently, I tried to pick up NV:MP, after having remembered about it and wondering how far it had come after a year. However, it has many incompatibilities with the few mods that it allows - 4GB crashes it, and I'm sure there are other mods that would crash NV:MP as well.

So, is it possible to create a completely vanilla and separate installation of New Vegas apart from my normal install? I do have an external hard drive lying around somewhere, though I haven't used it in a while.

Thanks!

Well, do you think Mod Organizers virtual install folder could help? I don't know how New Vegas MP is installed, so I don't know if a virtual Data folder would help or not. The profile feature of MO would work if all New Vegas MP needs is the Data folder. If it needs the main New Vegas folder though, it won't help. Steam does not typically allow multiple installs on the same PC as far as I'm aware though.

I read up on something similar and found that I can simply rename the Data folder to something different and then make a new one, copying over absolutely essential things. However, I'm unsure if that would enable switching back and forth between the two without problems - ex. switch current Data name to "oldata" and previous "oldata" (which would be the vanilla Data folder) to "Data". Were I to do that, I'm not sure if I would be able to switch between the two and avoid problems at the same time.

I'm sure that would work. However, you would need to be careful of anything that goes inside the main New Vegas folder - wouldn't want things drifting between your two setups. But, as you mentioned, I'm not really sure if that would have any undesirable effects. I would assume that it wouldn't. It sounds like a lot of trouble to me though. Probably too much trouble, at least to me.

I looked a tad more into it and I believe that NV:MP uses the main New Vegas folder (I mean, it's in there instead of data, so I should presume so?). Unless they were to issue some sort of support for the mods that may conflict with NV:MP, I suppose there's no use (or if there is, its a big hassle). Thanks!
