Is this just me?

i built my computer to be able to play every game i own on the highest settings

in the first window when you put in the oblivion disk i selected the "very high"

button which i thought would crank up everything to the highest

i played for a while and noticed how the grass still disapeared at practicaly the same distance as the 360 (unacceptable)

so i went to the options menu and took every slider there and cranked to the highest settings (except AA which i find unneccessary) now i know this may sound crazy but now it looks in fact worse

the shadowing looks very unrealistic, contrast between light and dark is too pronounced, and the far away mountainside just looks. . .a little blurry

is this just me because it seems as though the game wasnt meant for the advanced shaders used on highest settings

(also its no as though my computer is making things bad because i still get 80 FPS (ha ha ha my computer is unconquered  )

If you want your game looking really good after pumping at the max the video settings you need to edit the oblivion.ini as suggested in many guides over the web. There's one very good at tweakguides.com if you really need the max. But I don't really suggest this!

My own advice is: copy the Oblivion_default.ini located in Programs Files/Bethesda Softworks/Oblivion folder in your Documents/My Games/Oblivion folder and delete the Oblivion.ini already present here. Then rename the Oblivion_default.ini in Oblivion.ini and run the launcher. Select options in the menu allowing the game to discover the best settings, then press the Maximum/Best settings (? ..sorry I'm italian) button and change just the resolution if you have a big monitor and the AA/HDR settings (you can't run both at the same time). You may uncheck the Vertical Sync box as well, but you need to deactivate it in your graphic card driver as well though!

That is because they were building much of the game to work on both the PC and consoles. Since Consoles have pre-set hardware limitations, and there were some places where PCs were lacking at the time, they had to make concessions on both sides. Don't forget, Oblivion is almost 2 years old now. It's only natural that the vanilla game would eventually stop pushing the limits of PCs built for gaming. The LODs are blurry because they aren't generated within the game, but rather use simplified meshes and textures. By having lower resolution textures, they can free up more memory for use in things which are close enough to the player to matter.

As for things still looking bad, that is by and large a settings and texture issue. As mentioned, there are many settings which can be adjusted to make the lighting actually look right (shadows are still off though), and there are a number of high-rez texture packs available. You may wish to look into using both. Just be sure to do your research first, and understand what is being changed BEFORE actually making any changes. If you make a mistake, or decide against those changes, it can be difficult to revert in some cases.

thanks for all the help

i tryed all the suggestions (and thanks for giving them)

i found that the best thing to do is at first window clicking the "ultra high" quality button

then i went and changed all the draw distance settings to the max (but dont adjust any other sliders especialy the shadowing and lighting)

then i downloaded the high rez texture pack

i started up oblivion and it looks great

i think that the reason oblivion looks worse is because the ultra high end shaders and lighting where included but not optimized

so some shadows look a little to dark some light goes through objects its not supposed to ect.

and i still get 80 fps lol

im wondering if this is because oblivion doesnt support higher fps or if i need to install direct x 10 no sure but im fine 80fps is plenty

should look even better after i get this 22" monitor ive been saving for

has 2ms response 10,000:1 contrast 300 cd (way brighter than i could stand)

just wish my frys electronics would put it back on sale sooner until then i wait :ninja:

i still get 80 fps lol

I do so envy and loathe you. How much you got invested in that rig, if you don't mind me asking.

You can see my meager excuse for a computer in my profile, I got a whole 800$ invested that puppy.

Playmode:

640x480 med textures No grass, Med trees, 2/3 objects and actors full distant lod(game is nothing to me without being able to spot enemys and structures from afar). no 3d light, no shadows, no reflection, no ripples........I get 10 FPS if I am lucky, surprisingly no lag though since I maxed out my memory.

Screen shot mode

1440x960 large tex, full everything execpt 3d light...........1-3 FPS in full play render (very laggy). Toggling Flying Camera, disables collision and I get to a usable 7-8 FPS( still a little laggy but doable) I can now fly around and take High quality shots(using fraps) on my low end outdated system.

One day I shall rise to the ranks of today's technology only to be left in the dust by tomorrow's.

Well Sgt,

I guess i sorta envy you and then sorta feel sorry for yah when yo get that monitor! Please do not go blind, anyway i get around 50 FPS and own pretty much all the new games worth playing and i dont lag. I play this with hi-rez stuff except grass, my measly machine would never handle high rez grass................No i dont use Qarls either. Just high rez body textures. I do play with everything on max though andi love it!

lol well i suppose envy and loathe are appropriate

You can see my meager excuse for a computer in my profile, I got a whole 800$ invested that puppy.

voila you have answered your own question worm

i spent exactly the same amount of money on mine the cost of my parts are as follows

-q6600 intel quad core (make sure to get the GO revision)=$190 (normaly 250 but i got it from frys on sale)

-Diamond Radeon HD 3870=$200 (way better than nvidia and has a better price also)

-2 gigs of ballistix ram (DDR2)=$30

-Asus P5N-D mobo (has 2 PCIx 2.0 slots and has built in ethernet and sound card)=$150

-Antec PSU 550W=$60

-Antec 900 pc case=$100

-dvd burner=$30

-hard drive=$40

total money spent=$800

also note best place to get this stuff is from frys electronics because when they have it on sale nobobdy beats thier price

but in case you dont have a frys near you newegg is also very good

only problem with newegg is for returns YOU need to pay return shipping and they only ship ups

I guess i sorta envy you and then sorta feel sorry for yah when yo get that monitor! Please do not go blind

well im glad you care

luckily i have saved enough money to finnaly get a 22" lg monitor has 2 ms response time and 10,000:1 contrast ratio!!

im just waiting for frys to put it on sale again(they cycle through the different brands every weak)

Edit--------

actualy game looks best when you hit the "medium" button then turn on HDR

then got to option and make sure only the draw distance sliders are all the way up

and also you can allow shadows on yourself, trees, and grass

just make sure you never have the shaders all the way up :excl:

Edit----------

woops i forgot that i could just edit my earlier post sorry

You guys ALL make me feel like crap. I bought my Computer for $800 and have made no modifications to it , except for the RAM i added, default ram 512MB, my ram now 2GB, my processor is an AMD Mobile Sempron (Yes, it is a laptop, so that is one reason i may be playing with all the slider down, except for a few, like lighting and blood decals), my GPU is a NVIDIA GeForce Go 6150, not the best, but it's nice. and yes, most peoples worst fear, i am running Windows Vista Home Premium, it takes a good CPU and A good amount (for my financial status, 15 years old, no job, broke as heck) of ram to run, but i actually like it, it has a nice GUI, and it is very secure, sometimes so secure its annoying ("You want to run 'Oblivion', are you sure?", <Yes>, "Are you sure you are sure?", <Yes, now just let me play!!!!!>)

My FPS, i really don't want to say, but it is somewhere along the lines of 21 FPS <Goes into a corner and sulks, wishing he had an amazing computer>

P.S. - Sometimes i narrate my life, I'm weird
