G.E.C.K. Issues with OC'd CPU

Recommended Posts

Would love to get into modding FO4 and I've always been a pretty avid Overclocker. Which leads to my biggest frustration, I have never been able to get the GECK to work correctly on any of my rigs (Even FO3). Someone had told me a while ago that it could be the overclock that is screwing things up. Just wondering if anyone else has run across this issue and if there are any known fixes (Aside from disabling the OC). If anyone knows or has any links to more information on the problem it would be much appreciated!

Was just curious, really, as I've seen the CK be harder on memory than anything else (any individual piece that would be involved in an oc, at least).

I mean, the easiest way to test is to just put everything back to stock and see what happens (over several attempts) with the Creation Kit. You didn't really say you've tested at stock, just that you rather not run at stock just for this (unless I misread...which I'll admit that I do sometimes).

And if you're running any significant oc you'll have a few pieces of monitoring software running/logging, what do they say about the hardware state at the coinciding time of crashes?

Well that is the part I'm scratching my head about (I'll admit I haven't set anything back to stock to run a test I'll admit) the monitors just show me that my cache gets loaded and my usage goes up to 100% but I have to almost finalize whatever I'm doing and go to save the file before the CK will crash. Up until that point though the CK runs as choppy as you could imagine.

Cpu OC shouldnt have anything to do with CK crashing UNLESS you havent given it enough voltage thus having a unstable overclock.

There are several load tests for system stability so you can check your setup before blaming the cpu etc.

Things that matter ...

a) enough RAM 8 Gb and up recommended (suggest at least 16 Gb since the CK could be using over 6 Gb depending on what youre working on )

b)virtual memory settings ( make sure you have it set to at least 12 GB max and have enough free space on your HDD/SSD to cover it )

c) CPU at least 3.0 Ghz ( recommended multicore (quad at least)3.4-3.8 Ghz and up )........ CK performance depends A LOT on the cpu.

The "choppiness " IMO is probably a ram issue and maybe even a HDD desperately needing a defrag .

Seriously though...

It WOULD help A LOT if you actually showed us your system specs....

System Specs:

CPU: i5-4690k OC'd to 4.6Mhz

-Vcore stable (Over 24 stress test) @1.251v

Ram: 16 gigs dual channel Gskillz Ripjaws

GPUI: GTX1080 Founders edition.

Harddrives: 128 Adata SSD+ 1TB Samsung 850 Evo SSD (Both properly defragged regularly

*All water Cooled on a custom loop temps at load well below 60C

Note: I have never messed with the virtual memory settings (Didn't ever think I should of had to). But Thanks for the opinion.
