Texture Hell

Hey, all. Been playing New Vegas for the past few days in an effort to finally play Old World Blues and Lonesome Road... but after installing a few mods today, the game messed up big time. Textures are replaced by either bright purple colours or entirely different textures, which leaves the Mojave Wasteland a horribly depressing sight.

I've tried clean reinstalls twice - launching without any mods, too - I've tried starting a new game to see if it was a simple file corruption, I've made sure to use ArchiveInvalidation... and I'm at wit's end. Somebody, please help. :wallbash:

Currently, my mod list is just this:

And still, the Nellis AFB's front gate - just to have an example - looks like this:

Help?

Dunno if it's the problem, but FalloutNV.esm always, always, goes first. Then the DLCs (at least the quest ones, dunno about GRA). Then other stuff.

Just an idle thought, but I'm beginning to wonder if disabling one or all the pre-order packs would solve many problems. No basis for that statement except it seems like 90% of the peeps who are having technical difficulties (and who post their load order) have all 4 pre-order packs. Like, seriously. I don't even think that's an exaggeration. (And that's a lot of $ to spend.)

You could also try the "verify the integrity of game chache" thing in Steam.

Well, I've also tried several different load orders; tried having FalloutNV.esm in different positions, also tried running the game without the preorder packs, without any DLC's at all... nothing works - same problem every time.

You should follow what Kevkiev posted regarding your load order.

Regarding textures, reinstalling is fine but do you have custom textures in your data folder? Leftovers from previous installs? It's a long shot but if you make sure your texture folder is not the culprit then maybe the problem is somewhere else (have you messed around with your fallout.ini lately?) since you're saying that the problem was caused by mods you've uninstalled did you check if anything was left from these mods that would explain the problems you're having? Some mods come with custom BSA files which may include custom textures.

Also the "game cache" thingy in Steam that Kevkiev mentioned is not a bad idea.

I had the same idea, but I had deleted EVERYTHING in the Fallout folder for a clean install. What I did just a moment ago, though, was to delete everything again, then install it all over on another drive to avoid any leftovers. Now the textures are just fine. No idea why, but it worked. :/

Few suggestions for future.

1)Load order.FalloutNV first !!.You should remember that even if it is not because load order problem.

2)Install mods again (read mod description, maybe it is not compatible with you game or you need to update it)

3)Change option in Catalyst mipmap (not sure about your language version) to QUALITY (for ATI).Other options can cause problems like low graphic quality or pink/black textures.

4)Learn how to use FNVEDIT and make a merged patch.(This is for plugins but it will also give you an error if your load order is incorrect)

5)Try to delete 2 files in save game folder (FalloutNV and Prefs)

I can say for sure that your load order is very bad.Look at mine (default)

ah, note to self... I always thought the quest-type DLCs went before the add-on packs but, now that I think of it (!), it makes sense that the packs (being suited for the original NV) go right after Fallout NV.esm. (I don't have any preorder packs so never had to worry about it.)

  • 3 weeks later...

Hey all. I'm having a similar issue as this, except that when I load up my game, everything starts off just fine. It isn't until about a about a minute or two of play that various textures will start to get all screwy like in OP's second picture. A little longer after that, those red exclamation points start to pop up everywhere, usually starting with weapons that aren't vanilla and moving on to vanilla assets next (including weapons, building textures, etc). The sound for most weapons will stop functioning as well, and I'll be unable to pull up the game menu with Escape anymore, as it'll stop working altogether. At it's worst, all of the above will happen and the game will just kill itself. Each session never lasts for more than 2-3 minutes before everything becomes completely unstable.

It's as if the game starts losing track of how to access all it's data or something, I'm not sure. I've tried verifying the integrity of the game's cache through Steam, and I've made sure ArchiveInvalidation is in place with all changes necessary, and the problem persists in the order mentioned above every time. I'm not certain what at all could be causing this, and I fear my files may be corrupt. Any help or insight would be tremendously appreciated. Thank you!
