My Opinion on FONV

Surely what's in the world is far more important than how much of it there is? Fallout 3 did have a lot of places to explore but there was little of any interest to find, exploring wasn't as pointless as Oblivion but it wasn't exactly great either. As I said in my previous post Bethesda are good at building worlds but they are useless when it comes to filling them, Skyrim is proof enough of that. New Vegas's strength isn't the size of the world but the people living in it, the various factions and the way things change in reaction to your actions. If you're playing it like FO3 then that may explain why you're missing so much, the reason why there is a divide between those who prefer one over the other is because underneath they are very different games. As for the story I think you've missed something somewhere, there is more to the story than simple revenge. Maybe it's just not your kind of game? the world would be a very dull place if we all liked the same things.

dont bring up the ES games as i havent played any of them (nor do i plan on it) so comparing them or using them as references just goes over my head lol....as i said, i Loved exploring FO3. there was a TON to find. reading the computer terminals. finding real relics such as the Declaration of Independence, or the Apollu Shuttle or seeing the monuments, or seeing how slightly they altered the factual history to make it their own. seeing references to the war. seeing a couple of skeletons in a closet with two guns showing they tried to survive in there, or some rubble someone had obviously used as shelter under the highway. the different little colonies there were like Megatown or Tenpenny Tower or Andale or the "Vampires" in the Sewers or the National Guard Bomb Shelter that a family took residence in, but one was turned into a Ghoul (and you fight that ghoul) stuff like that is amazing. and i didnt find any of it in FONV. and its no surprise as their is absolutely nothing to explore. no houses or subway. barely any buildings what so ever. any buildings that there are are either one story buildings or just ruins. very few settlements that i found. hardly any landmarks besides the Hoover Damn. Hell even most of Vegas was made up. youd think they woulda kept some landmarks like The Lux or all the little monuments from around the world that are there. but nope. nothing that i recognize anyways (not that ive been to Vegas) pretty bland imo. bunch of desert. as i said, i never even felt like i was in a post apocalyptic wasteland. only reason it even woulda felt like it is cause its a reskinned FO3. there was little reminding me of the 1950s setting. i could go on and on....its not a s*** game. its still Fall Out and i liked the world enough to play it. and as i said, i am giving it another try, getting into it more as it should have been (less mods, hardcore mode, etc) still debating if i wanna side with NCR or the Legion. prolly NCR. i dont like the Legion. :P

Well in New Vegas's defense. It's the kind of game where you can't really appreciate all the subtle nuances of the story unless you play in different ways each time. If you always play the same way, shooting towards the end as quickly as you can, then you're going to miss out on a lot of subtle stuff. Don't get me wrong, I really loved Fallout 3, but it's story places too much importance on the PC alone. It's kind of like everyone was just waiting for you to show up to solve their problems for them. NV is also guilty of this, I really don't see why the courier is considered such hot shot. But you get the feeling that things would play out without you for the most part. Though Fallout 3 is still my favorite game out of the two, I kind of think you're giving NV a raw deal because you're comparing it to it's prequel.

Also, just in general because people seem so hellbent on bashing skyrim everywhere I go. Skyrim has a very nice storyline. I'm not talking about the main quests and the guild quests, those were weak s*** no matter how you slice it. But do some digging around for books. The books you find in game have so much background information that you can spend hours going through them and not get bored or hear anything repetitive. which is quite impressive considering there's so many of them..So don't accuse bethesda of lazy writing because you don't learn everything about the story just by playing the game straight through. That's being a lazy player.

Back to the topic at hand. Seems like from what you've said you kind of rushed through new vegas. Thinking back on your experiences with new vegas, how much of that game did you really discover on your first timid steps through the capitol wasteland? I'm willing to bet like myself you were so dumbstruck by the scale of the game that you kind of hugged close to the main path the first time and didn't pick up on the other parts of the game until you were more confident in your abilities. Try building up your terrain knowledge and then just set out on a quest to visit every place in the game, and then come back and tell us if NV isn't worth some merit.

oh yes. i deff rushed through NV. i tried many many times to get into it, and the beginning never hooked me, so i finally loaded up some mods and beat the game, doing some side quests but mostly sticking along the main path, that said, i did venture around a lot (because i wanted to kill stuff) so while i didnt do a lot of the side quests, i did explore a lot of the land......FO3 however, i played like i do every RPG and i stay as far away from the main quest as possible. it was actually my most in depth play through of my 3. the other 2 i knew where to go and i knew which quests were good/fun to do and i stick to those and i just knew what to do in general, whereas my first play through i did everything i could. i wandered, i accepted everything, i did everything i thought i could do i didnt finish the game until i got to lvl 20. (then i later went back to get to lvl 30 when the DLC came out)

i am giving NV a second chance, and playing more in the way the game should be played (almost modless) as i said, the mods im using just make the game slightly more enjoyable. no way in hell would i touch this game if i could only perk up every 3 levels. looking forward to my next level is what keeps me going. having to wait 3 levels would kill me. so i do have a mod that allows me to perk every lvl. then another mod that gave me more style options when i was building my character.....lastly i have a mod that boosts my tagged skills (puts 2 points instead of 1) and i get perks based on the points i have in skills. nothing to change the game or make it so i can rush through, just make it a little more enjoyable for me. so its less boring.

You know if you're really looking to get back some of the fun of finding random monster and goodie filled locations and you're cool with adding mods I'd suggest checking out a world of pain On the nexus. It adds a lot of locations from what I hear, Just started playing through it this morning but it seems pretty tight so far.

I'm not going to knock New Vegas because I love it. I also loved Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Skyrim.

Of the four though, New Vegas was the only one that really caught me out because I 'finished' it having probably only played about half of it - I didn't fully appreciate the 'point of no return' really was the end section. I thought I'd return to New Vegas a hero and sort out my new city. But no, the credits rolled... and I had to reload from before the end bit knowing how it will all end.

Okay, it was probably my own fault, but I would have preferred to have not been led quite so easily through the main plot.

the game is actually extremely frustrating right now without mods. now, from my current save point, no matter where i go, about 30 seconds after my save i get ambushed by some Legion ppl (4 or 5) and my weapons do absolutely nothing to them. even armor piercing rounds to the head or shotgun blasts to the head, only take away a bar or two of health dynamyte does almost nothing and this early in the game, im not specced to guns or explosives or anything. then they just kill off ED-E and i dont stand a chance. extremely extremely frustrating.

atm i cant beat the legion without ED-E dieing. not a deal, but extremely annoying

Not to be "that guy" but you might consider turning down the difficulty a notch. It sucks but games like this can't really be played from the higher difficulties right off the bat unless you know how to properly deck yourself out.

I am tru hardoce firsts Fallouts fanatic and fan, I love these games but I realy love New Vegas too. I don't like in new Fallouts only game mechanics (bad TPP camera, moving animations) but in Skyrim is better so I hope Fallout 4 would be great. New Vegas with few mods is awesome and yes... it is Fallout. :)
