Mod-related Crash tracking?

Recommended Posts

Lately I've been experiencing a lot of various crashes after adding mods, which I have a tendency to add in bunches. Is there a way to quickly, and easily determine which mod is causing the crash, and possibly why? Or is trial and error activating/deactivating mods the only way?

I have noticed that it seems to happen more with mods that add locations, and really only within the past week or possibly two. I'm not sure if Steam Workshop has anything to do with it or not, but I've been getting a bunch of mods from there. Although I did try one mod from both SW and Nexus to see if it made a difference, but both caused my game to crash on load so it may not be Workshop related. Might it somehow have something to do with my game? I don't know what's changed recently other than mods though.

Oh I use NMM and SKSE if it makes a difference. I only open the Launcher when installing new mods from Workshop.

Locations sometimes break some quests. I don't know if you can really blame them for the crashes. Maybe. The game is crash-prone, especially if you have ambitious settings. Scale those back, and you magically (not really) scale back the crashing.

Trial and error is really your most precise tool. Otherwise, you're stuck with guessing.

While I do agree the game is crash-prone at times, I do know that the mods are causing the various crashing, although I don't know why they cause the crashing. My settings are fine as the game runs fine without the mods being active.

Through trial and error I have been figuring out which mods are causing the crashes and keeping a list for myself so I don't re-install them later. So far I've got ten mods in the list (nine of which add locations), which may grow if/when more crashes appear.

Guess it looks like I'm stuck with trial and error to find the offending crash-causing mod(s), tedious but doable. Just too bad I don't have a way to figure out why they're causing the crashing, whether it's an incompatibility with some other mod or something else entirely.
