Can't start Take Up Arms.

I walked in, talked to Kodlak. He told Vilkas to test my mettle. But Vilkas will not walk out into the training yard he stays standing where he is. I talk to him and he says "Not here, out in the yard" but doesn't move. I go out to the yard and use the "place at me" command with Vilkas' code and he just walks back into Jorvaskr.

 

Any ideas?

This game error is caused by not walking through the main gate when you go to turn in the quest. You are given the dialog to go see him, but he never responds. The only way to fix this is to go back to a prior save. The quest does not see that you entered whitrun even though you seemed to get credit for the prior quest stage.

 

A similar bug happens when you turn in the dragon stone. The quest to go fight the tower dragon will not spawn. You need to walk through the Whiterun gate. the error does not always happen, but when it does, it is solely related to fast travel.

 

Also note, when you have this happen, other quests start to break and never get to the completion stage (usually stage level 200, but not always)

May i also ask if Lydia is following you correctly? She will not walk with/to me. (If you have Lydia that is.)

Just that that issue is a problem with walking as well.

 

Sorry for being away, sickness, doctors and frustration. It was decided I'd do the thieve's guild. Anyway. Thats the thing. I walked through the main gates of Whiterun straight after. (After starting a new game) and got the same bug still. And I have never gotten it when turning in the Dragon Stone.

 

Not only that but at one point I used the set stage command. Got to picking up the fragment with Farkas. But had to use "disable" "enable" on him to get him to turn, otherwise I would have been stuck behind that door forever. Got to the initiation into the Companions bit, but the quest doesn't resolve, Skjor doesn't talk to me about meeting him in the under forge. No one leaves and I can't move from my standing spot.

 

It is like the whole Companions bit is bugged. Which sucks because that a favourite bit. I was also hoping the new patch would fix that but no, now I'm just waiting for a fix to make my mods work again. some of my mods like "open face guard helms" not working I can cope with. Parts of the story not working is another story.

 

Please don't tell me I have to start again for the umpteenth time and redo all the Thieve's Guild quests I have done. I'm this close to becoming to new master.

May i ask what the set stage command is?

I'm still stuck with Farkas/Vilkas not walking to the yard, the companions guild seems like it will suit my character so it's a bit fustrating!

 

Luckily, i haven't (touch wood) had any problems with my mods so far.

 

Since the new patch came out though, people don't seem to be moving around as they should in my game.

In Whiterun i have about three clusters of three people who stand together and do not move, or go home at all.

I even started a whole new game but both the companions bug and the people standing around still persist unfourtunately.

Eh, sounds like you and I have a lot of the same glitches. Yup, every time I exit Dragonsreach there is a cluster of NPC's standing on the stairs not doing much in the way of anything at all. And no, Lydia is not following me the way she should, she's not even at home (Breezehome) she's still in the loft at Dragonsreach. Although I may have fixed that either by hiring her then dismissing her to prompt the line "I'll be at home if you need me" or disabling her then enabling her.

 

About set stage command. If you are having trouble getting the training bit done then type into the console

 

setstage c00 30

 

It will set you on the task after "Train with Vilkas" the unfortuante thing is, that or the complete quest command didn't work when I was getting stuck in the initiation into the companions bit.

Hey, I just found a fix for the companions, I think, or at least Vilkas is acting the way he should. If you have any mods with skyforge in them disable them.

 

What promted me was that I found someone else saying the skyforge + was screwing the companions for them. So even though I didn't have tht one. I had others that included Skyforge, so I disabled them for the moment.

Thank you so much!

I had the "Complete Skyforge Kit v3-Skyim smithing v3", which added smelters to all of the missing blacksmiths across Skyrim, and disabling that worked a charm.

It also fixed the people standing around, but i haven't checked on Lydia yet.

 

I would never have even thought that disabling that mod may help, so thank you again. :)
