FO4 CTD on loading with mods installed, mods uninstalled game runs great

It is very annoying to delete everything and re-install all over again but sometimes it is the "first" best solution .. I started to play in PC not even a year ago and I have restarted from scratch my Skyrim SE and FO4 several times because I did not know how to handle mods at all. I have been learning the hard way and now, I think I have a much clear understanding on what to do.

I am not saying that I am expert but if I ever run into trouble again, I would go nuke, wipe out the entire scheme : FO4, all mods and NMM and reinstall the whole thing again. My procedure is set now to : reinstall FO4, clean all master files, start playing without mods till my robot advise me to go to where Preston is; hard save and then start installing only mods that I know did not cause me any trouble. Most likely, if you go to the "most downloaded" mods, they are fully tested not just by the authors but for thousand of players ... but even though I know that for example CBBE is a secure mod, I read the description again, posts and any recent changes and then install.

I also have a list ( in excel ) of all my mods that I know are working fine and I use that list to know what mod activate first and which one second and so for. It is a time consuming process but it has been working for me. Last but not the least, in my last play through, I did not install any texture/graphic mod at all because even though they are amazing, they do apply globally in combination with ( for example ) WOTC ( War of the commonwealth - heavy mod - ), they may cause CTD's so I decided to simplify my gaming by not installing any of those texture mods and give priority to WOTC which is definitely the butter of FO4, very immersive, constant combat but at the same time, very demanding.

My rig is a decent one but I do not overstress it with mods that IMO, are not necessary. I just have 85 so far and I do not think I will add more. My mods are divided in 3 categories : building, weapons and power armors. IMHO, that is the core of FO4. I don't waste my time installing for example a mod that will give me a sunglasses ray ban ... or mods that have not been downloaded and endorsed by thousands and tested by a lot of players.

I am happy that the OP finally was able to find the solution with the help of Mighty Zog and Fonger. Happy playing guys ....

cheers

I have to disagree about cleaning masters if you mean the DLC esm files.

I decided to try that to see if it would make the game run smoother and it broke it.

took me a couple of days to reinstall it again and then reinstall my mods.

the upside is that my mods are now installed off the latest versions instead of being updated over old versions and I got rid of a couple that I found I could live without :)
