Getting your helpers back

Does any on know where to get back helpers if the story-line separates you from your team?

For example and plz note I'm trying like hell to keep it spoiler free but its hard cause this is exactly where I am:

 

While questing through vault 87 I had 3 helpers:

 

Mr. Gutsy

Dog Meat

Paladin Star

 

After vault 87 you get swept away to raven rock, the game goes on.

 

When I exit raven rock none of my helpers are anywhere to be found?

 

Do I go back to 87 to get them? Or there original stating locations are they gone for ever in this play though? Or something else?

Thanks I got my answer but I didn't like it one bit! Gutsy is holding all of my best gear! And you can only get him back when your karma is neutral! And then to get star back when your karma is good! My Karma is currently good so I guess I'm going to little lamp-light to murder some kids (lower my karma from good neutral) and then donate a s*** ton of scrap to to the water pepz in megaton to get back Star, do you know any other way to a get your karma down and then up again like a console command or something??

This happened to me at vault 87. I had two followers and could not find them anywhere. Eventually, I found them just outside vault 87 past Murder Pass back in a section of tunnels I had never been in before. I think I had to go through the reactor area and back out into the tunnels to get to that area. Once I found them, told them to follow me, they would not go back through the reactor area. I was able however to fast travel from that location to another location with them.
