modded to death

okay so i was modding my fallout 4 and the main body texture breaks and it looks weird after trying to fix the problem for about 2 hours i get frustrated enough to delete every file having to do with fallout 4 and nexus mods from my computer. re downloaded both and tried putting all the mods in one at a time. now none of the mods work. i can still see traces of them in the game (like weapons being listed in my inventory but unable to see the weapon when i equip it) but nothing is working how it should

i think i might have deleted a file i probably shouldn't have like the falloutcustom.ini or something to that nature but i am not sure anymore. other than the mods the game runs perfectly i think. any ideas for trouble shooting?

well , if you already deleted files of the game itself , maybe you should just uninstall the game , the do a fresh install

after that , just try to load the game , see that it loads and plays properly , then you can try and mod the game

as for using mods , it seems like you install mods manually , which isn't recommended unless you are experienced with modding

if you are going to install many mods , I would recommend you try and use Mod Organizer (I think version 2 is better for FO4 , but do check before installing)

due to the way it installs mods (in folders outside your games' folder) , it will prevent mod conflicts and such

it might be a bit tricky to use at first , but there are excellent guides online for basic usage , which should get you going easily

other than that , follow the basic steps for modding (using LOOT , making the correct patches and such) , and if you did everything right , your game should play quite well (as well as any Beth game can play , anyhow)

how this helps , and feel free to ask any questions if you have any :)

I think it is just the deleted .ini. But after a new installation, the .ini should be also installed - or at least after the first minutes in a new game.

Alternative, you may have installed too many mods, or/and using one of the few bugged nmm version's, or a bad load order. I install my mods since years manually and I had never problems like that, if I had install everything correctly and activated it then with nmm.

it's really weird because i loaded up a Save file from my old game before i deleted everything and if the mods were not loading i would have gotten a message saying i am loading a game without all the mods detected on the save file, so i'm guessing the mods are actually being detected but are not loading somehow? i guess the next course of action is to delete all the mods and see if i can get one mod to work. failing that i guess i need to find a step by step guide on how to mods and try and find something i did wrong...

Well you already tore most of it down- now you just have to finish the job and rebuild everything. Good way to learn if nothing else.

when i said i deleted everything i mean i incinerated everything sharing a name with the nexus mod manager or fallout. so yeah everything is gone. probably a better way to do it but it was late and i was frustrated nothing was working. i'm just worried i might have deleted something i shouldn't have.

i used mod manager, not sure what version but i think it's the newest one. small update: i was able to get the game to run and i believe that none of the mods are actually loading into the game from the newly downloaded manager, i am using an old save file and modded weapons and armor are in my inventory but when equipped they either show me holding air or have strange mesh issues (i'm guessing this is because i have bodyslidestudio and it's changing the texture and not the frame (i might have my terms mixed up) )

anyway now i need to figure out if the issue is just my mods not loading properly or something else. have you ever seen or experienced mods behaving like that?

update: i found a problem in the fallout4pref.ini bur now the game won't run, even without mods

I am looking at completely rebuilding my OS because of a bug and my mistakes. Rebuilding your Fallout4 folder and mods shouldn't take you more than say a week at most. This will give you a chance to go over everything carefully and see what your problem was or at least to build a more stable game. I discovered some good mods I missed by rebuilding- so it is not a terrible thing. Making some of these mods run well together will require you to have a better understanding of your game anyway.

When you look for mods, always pay attention to install instructions, bugs, and compatibility. If you don't see a "bugs" section for the mod then skim the post section to see what people have been saying about it.
