First playthrough

Hey guys!

I bought Fallout 4 two years ago but haven't touched it ever since, i wanted to finish my education before diving into another big rpg after i finished Skyrim.

So I basically need help with my first playthrough, would you guys recommend me using mods for the 1st play or play it as it is? The only thing i installed so far is the new dialog mod, do you guys think i should install more to make the game "better" without modding it too much? So what i'm basically asking is, what mod is a must have?

Would love to hear your thoughts!

howdy;

that is some dedication, to not play a game for 2+ years.

I applaud that 'delayed gratification' prerogative.

I'm of two minds.

by now, no doubt you've seen all the spoilers, so, you could just dive in to the mods you want to improve the game and make it a cogent narrative.

Spoilers expire at this point basically.

that said, you kinda gotta watch the original cut/game to play as it shipped -

it's like the 1977 theatrical cut of SW, vs the Re-remix where Greedo shot repeatedly.

SWfans need to watch SW in the same as-released viewing order - OT: PT: NT.

if, they want to understand the mentality of the 'as-it-happened' fanbase.

you kinda gotta play FO4 as the steamer it frankly was, and then, make it your own hehe.

or, play FO4, then FO3, then FONV, then FO4 again.

if you like settlement building (that lets you make your own city-states/crudholes of evil), you're in for a treat,

there's then companion mods,

or total overhauls like War of the Commonwealth, Beantown etc.

I recommend watching your favorite "mod meta-reviewer" -

such as SunBunz, Petard, Tyrannicon, MxRPlays, Oxhorn etc,

to name but a few.

they'll showcase mods, and give you a 'whitmans sampler' of random mods.

the rest is up to you -

your vision of Fallout lore, your game lore and subjective aesthetics.

I hope you'll enjoy it.

PS Toddsville is, in my humble opinion,

the best 'unreleased mod' ever. It allows you to have Mayor Todd Howard, of Toddsville,

among a sea of todd howard 'gary' clones...

let them live, or, show them what lays beyond.

This game is incredibly boring after a few playthroughs and even if you have all the mods you could ever want you will never find a mod that fixes the terrible writing and horrible story. The burden of the settlement building thing is just too much to bear after restarting again and again even with settlement transfer mod the whole thing is just super tedious. Keep an eye on the scrap everything mod as they are trying to get things updated to v3.0 which is supposed to have some really good features. I just hope they clear off the junk near all the build borders of each settlement so we don't have to waste time manually clearing that stuff every time we go through the game. Many of the settlements are crap with horrible up down landscape and tiny build limits and low fps around each one. The scrap everything mod currently has issues around some settlements because of pre combine data problems like bunker hill and jamaica plain. The fps gets really low in those settlements even before building there so hopefully they fix that soon.

The only thing keeping me interested in this game is the gun mods and some power armor mods like worsins garage and enclave power armor and a mod can't remember the name right now it fixes power armor so you don't take damage until the power armor is worn down enough or destroyed. The main problem with gun mods is the double step sound bug while using power armor because of animation limits that nobody has found a way to fix yet. If you have not played this game yet then find something better to do with your time the game is super boring after a while and requires a TON of real life time to get through. Best thing to do is find ways to make more money all the time as most games these days are really kinda boring anyway.

If you just have to play the game then wait about two more months as bugthesda has said they are going to release another game before the end of the year and it might be a good idea to wait for another patch if any to fallout 4 to fix additional cash grab club issues. Nobody wants to have their game updated and screwed up again and again then have to wait for the F4SE team to update again and mods like settlement transfer to update again. The unofficial patch team are playing the wait and see game right now too so it is better to wait a while longer.

I am seriously considering playing new vegas again but I can't stand the low end graphics and derpy walk/run animations so if I can work past those two things I just might play the game for a few months to get away from fallout 4 boredom.

There are over 1,000 hours of interactive entertainment in the base game, no mods needed if you have imagination. I wish I could do it over again.

Lots of irritants in settlements and companions that mods help with, but its so down to personal preference that opinions are not that useful.

Although, once you have mastered combat in survival mode, see how good you are with the SKK survival quest mod :)

Agree I had to stop at around L50 in my first run half way through the main quest as it was zero challenge of death. Restarted in survival, then restarted without settlements, then restarted without companions to run from v111 to all main quest endings. 1,000 hours later looking for challenges like "whats the lowest level i can follow the main quest to kellog and take him down in survival with no cheats, mods or death and only vanilla equipment" (currently L11 with a 10mm). Quest dialogue scenes become totally tedious ...

Clearly what's needed is a PUBG like survival challenge in the wonderful retro-future Fallout 4 world.

How exciting! I wish I could watch your first playthrough.

I took forever to touch this game at first, too. But, that was because I didn't think i'd like it at all. I was dead wrong, it's like my favorite game over the last two years.

Ok. I'll suggest some basic mods that don't change the game in any bad ways.

I quite enjoy the game Vanilla, I just dusted off my old Vanilla game and it's all i've wanted to play this past week. But, there are some minor things that are just plain silly, which won't break the Vanilla experience for you.

Also, whether you go with mods or not, if you think the game is too easy then don't be afraid to up the challenge. If you think you're doing too much damage, then just weaken your weapon. If you think enemies aren't hurting you enough, then take off some armor. Simple. Easy. If you're worried that any of these mods have made the game too easy, just weaken yourself up until each fight is fun and challenging. I do find that anything short of Survival Mode is just a joke with how easy it is, so I dropped about 300 armor value and took the mods off my weapons. Also stopped using VATS a long time ago. I find that the game gets old sooooooo fast if you're stuck in VATS constantly.

Firstly, try Armorsmith Extended. It basically will let you put Ballistic Weave on all under-clothing. There's plenty of under-clothes that work exactly the same as the *only* 3 clothes that Bethesda programmed to be Ballistic Weavable. It seems crazy that they didn't just program all the little under-clothes to be Weaveable. So, yeah, use that mod to do so. You'll still have to acquire the skill to Ballistic Weave on your own.

Second, try Legendary Modification. This mod will let you put any Legendary Effect you want on any piece of armor or weapon. Now, i'm gonna suggest that you only transfer Legendary Effects that you find naturally, rather than straight-up craft it on there. For a more Vanilla experience. But, it's your world~

Next, try AWKCR. It's basically necessary for a lot of mods to function, and on it's own it does nothing. Might offer a backpack or something. Or allow you to craft basic armor/weapons, given the right Perks. Nothing too major.

Oh, and definitely get QuickTrade. It's just soooo convenient not having to talk with NPCs to trade with them. (only works on merchants, settlers, and companions)

After that, maybe try Recruit 20 Followers. It's the simplest, least buggy Follower mod that i've found. Basically, it gives you 20 rings, and any human (only humans) you equip one onto will follow you as a non-companion. It can be pretty fun, if you end up liking Companions.

And last, get Cheat Terminal, and Cheat Room. Both of those are just plain useful. And Cheat Room is particularly helpful if you run into a large variety of glitches or bugs. I say get them just in case of emergencies, they do nothing if you never use them. And they're only Holotapes. Pro Tip - you can use the Cheat Room gun to equip one of the 20 Followers rings onto any human NPC that you can't naturally trade with, for interesting followers. I'm partial to the Neighborhood Watch guards...

I'd seriously recommend armorsmith extended and AWKCR, for the above reasons, as well as tales from the commonwealth, and depending on how you end up liking or hating settlement buildibg, sim settlements. Tales adds a few companions and many quests scattered throughout the game in such a natural way, that I'd bet money that the only way you'd tell them apart from the base game in a 1st playthrough, is that the quests are written better than the vanilla quests. i, and many others really love settlement building, but if it gets to tedious, sim settlements kinda makes it an apocalyptic sims mini game. hard to explain, but just Google any of those mods to check them out

You could do worse than get Heather Casdin as a companion. She is the only companion I can stand for long periods of time as she never comments on "Junk" and doesn't have likes or dislikes so I don't have to think "how will she react to this ?". Cait is great for lockpicking ability in the early levels.
