I'm sorry this is not a direct reply to your question. But Andrew made a book with an original texture (at least the cover is original). It is in this mod: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/downloads/file.php?id=11967

You can probably figure out how he did it by looking at his files.

His mods are all free to use so you can also use the book without asking if you want.

thanks for the reply but i have already made a custom book with covers before but as a direct replacer texture , i know i could prob use a nilf file and point it to the texture but i wanted to just use the textures only to keep the file size down, but i think i will just bite the bullet and use a nilf .

I am having trouble with that too. I made a custom skill book and I also made an awesome cover for it as well, but I cant replace the cover. The only textures available are character and 1st person view textures. Help.

I would suggest doing what i plan to do . extract a book model nilf and link that to your custom textures in the nilf.

than load up the nilf model in ck and use that as the custom model for the book i think i might work , ive have not got around to it just yer been way to busy on other elements of my witcher mod.

You should be able to override the book texture with an alternative texture without needing to edit the nif (and without physically replacing the original texture file). The procedure should be very similar to the way that actors can be retextured without needing to duplicate and edit their nifs.

Find the book form that points to the nif file and click the "edit" button that reveals the nif file path and which also gives you a "preview" option for the model.

Under the file path field there should be a list of textures that the model is using. They should have an index number on the left, the first will of course be "0".

Just click on the name to the right of the zero (or whatever corresponding number, if there are multiple textures in the model) and select your replacement texture.

If your texture doesn't appear in the list, then there is probably another form that must be created, that the CK will recognise as a book texture. It shouldn't be too hard to figure it out. Once you have selected the new texture, you will instantly see the result in the preview in the same window.

It's more efficient to retexture actors/objects using existing nifs rather than making duplicate nifs all the time. Sorry if my instructions are a bit vague, I'm writing this off the top of my head. I'll post exact instructions when I get a chance.

There is another form you need it's a texture set, you need to add your custom texture to a texture set, then the texture set will appear in that pop up list. I don't have the energy to fully describe right now, but if you want to do it without reworking the nif search for a tutorial on "texture sets".

@tetradite: that's correct. The texture set is simple to make. Just browse all the forms in the left hand side of the Object Window in the CK and you will find the TextureSet group. If you look at any of those forms it should be pretty obvious what you need to do to make your own pointing to your custom textures. I just can't explain it all now as I don't have the CK on this computer  Edited by steve40
