I'm playing SSE, not Oldrim.

I'm using skse64 v1.7.3, no ENBs.

I've tried everything I can think of short of wiping all mods and uninstalling/re-installing the game.

Everything was running fine two days ago. Today, when I started up the game via NMM's shortcut to the skse64_loader the skse DOS window flashed normally, then the screen went black as if the game were starting, but it immediately CTD'd - didn't even get to the logo.

I rebooted the computer for another, unrelated reason and when I was back up, I tried the game again the same way and everything loaded fine. However, when I press the map key (M) the game CTD's.

Here's what I've done to troubleshoot - all to no effect.

Ran LOOT & WryeBash

Disabled all mods

Cleaned several saves with ReSaver

Started the vanilla game (without skse64)

Started a very early save

Did a Steam validation, which downloaded 4 files

I tried enabling Papyrus logs per the How to ask for help sticky, but the game CTD's with those settings.

Also, I tried every other key in the game and they all work - only the map key crashes the game.

That's the limit of my troubleshooting knowledge. I don't know what else to do except wipe the game, Skyrim My Docs folder and all mods and start all over.

Please tell me I don't have to go to that extreme!

maybe it's a map mod

As I said, I disabled all mods. The map mods were the first ones I disabled.

Archaon, it turns out you may very well be right - kind of...

I backed up my entire Skyrim folder in My Docs and deleted the "active" one, then started a new game.

Went through the starting sequence until I had control of my character and whaddya know? I hit "M" and no crash. I then realized about the only thing I hadn't reverted to its original state was the INI files. So copied a few of my current saves from the other day when things were working to the newly created My Docs/Skyrim folder and fired 'er up. Boom! No crash on hitting "M". So it was likely a map setting in the INI file - at least that's what it certainly looks like.

I was using BethINI, but I didn't install it until after I had quite a few mods installed, so using the revert to default INIs feature in that was useless in my case.

I'm in the process of re-activating my mods - starting with BethINI...

BIG lesson learned!
