Lower FPS over playtime

Closertothesun

Recommended Posts

As the title suggests, my game seems to go from 60 down to a constant 33-47fps over playtime and only resolves itself when restarting the game and loading back in.

I've tried all the prescribed methods: Autopurge, NVSR, Performance of the gods. No dice.

It sucks because this is the most stable New Vegas load order I've ever had, no crashes, no texture problems, it's just this framerate bug.

UPDATE: Saving and loading seems to fix it till it happens again and you have to save and load again.

Still, if anybody knows the underlying issue and how to fix it that would be awesome because the saving loading thing really kills immersion.

Your load order doesn't tell us if you have a bunch of "hi-rez" textures installed, or are running a "greater than 1920x1080" display. While your hardware may be capable of handling that load, the game wasn't designed for it. Try using lower rez textures (1024x1024 for instance) or lower your display quality and size as a test.

Please see the 'Solutions to Performance problems' and 'Solutions to Post-Processor (ENB/SweetFX et. al.) problems' sections in the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide for other suggestions.

Are you running on Win10? ENB on Win10 usually exhibits a similar FPS drop. 30FPS is certainly playable, and was the norm for a 32-bit game seven years ago. A faster framerate is not really necessary for this game.

I am using 4k textures as well as win10.

Like I said, it fixes itself if i load a save, and I'd rather do that than play lower than 60fps (I'm really anal about that when it comes to bethesda games).

I feel like I shouldn't have to downgrade my textures though. My rig is a beast and I feel like mod authors wouldn't post 4k textures if they knew it would screw up your framerate right?

Ok, anyway to force restart scripts in increments or anything?

I've cleaned my save by the way so there are no orphaned scripts.

Also, are there any ini changes you might recommend? I've seen a lot of forums post about low fps over playtime but a lot of the solutions are those kind of "duh" solutions like installing NVAC or NVSR which I already have.

Events that occur over time (especially when they "go away" upon restarting) generally indicate gradual "memory exhaustion" due to "leaks" that don't get cleaned up. I don't recognize either "texturemb pool" or "reserved texturemb pool" settings from either "enblocal.ini" or "enbseries.ini" on the STEP Project pages (which are my "goto" reference). That doesn't mean anything, but they would like to hear about such settings if you can provide a reference for them. Those settings may be playing a role, as too high (large) a setting can cause issues just as too low (small) a setting can.

4K textures are already putting a massive strain on a game that never contemplated images greater than 2096x2096 pixels (generally considered "large" or "hi-rez" sizes). Then you have to remember that graphic display resolutions are measured in "pixels per inch" ("ppi"), so a 4K UHD (Ultra HD), also referred to as UHDTV-1 or 4K × 2K, is a display resolution of 3840×2160 pixels (four times as many pixels as FHD: 1920×1080 which was the usual design limit for later 32-bit games) in the same 16:9 aspect ratio. (Screens are measured diagonally, so it is not a simple "double each dimension" formula.) Then you have to account for "depth" as well as "color range" information as part of the memory requirement for each pixel. You don't indicate if you are using "ENBoost", which is virtually a requirement for 4K textures. Please see "Texture Size" on the TESTG site "Overview" page.

Again: with older games you can't always get what you want. You have to settle for what they can provide.

These are the settings I was talking about:

ReservedMemorySizeMb=512
VideoMemorySizeMb=4064
I was just too lazy to open the file at the time to see what the actual name was.
Are you saying if I downloaded 4k textures but am running the game at 1920x1080 it's a useless venture?
I'm not 100% sure how these things work.
