How safe is it to experiment with texture and graphics mods?

One thing I never get tired of doing is experimenting with improving and tweaking is the graphics. I am always a little scared though of causing problems with mods so that things will crash etc. But are mods that does not affect gameplay really, like flora, texture and graphics generally safe to experiment more with, especially if you have some good structure in that you uninstall things properly etc?

Also I have never understood fully how it works in practice when you install a texture mod. Say you install a texture mod that change the grass that have an .esp. Will there be both the vanilla texture in the Skryim folder and the flora texture mod, and if you uncheck the .esp will it use the regular vanilla textures instead? Also how does it work if you have 2 different profiles? If one profile is using the flore textures and the other is using vanilla does that mean that both textures exist at the same time in the folder?

Texture mods tend to be rather safe when compared to script mods. When you install a texture mod it is replacing the previous texture. When you change profiles the manager uninstalls the mods in the previous profile and saves their settings and load order.
