Improving Archery

To improve archey, make hit boxed that actually conform to the shape of what you are shooting at. After the very first update, the distance shooting got incredibly bad. It still is. The collision AI on the NPC's/critters is horrible. Shooting through targets or near distant targets causes no awareness on its part. The dragons that fly around and are never hit or respond to your shooting is another indictor. An english longbow had a range well beyond 300M. With Skyrim technology, a longbow is junk. You would think that archery range and the ability to actually affect the environment at range would have been considered.

You can improve the range and accuracy of your arrows with some ini tweaks.

In your Skyrim ini add under

[Combat]

f1PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7

f3PArrowTiltUpAngle=0.7

This will shift the point of aim to the center of the aiming reticle (with this setting you will hit targets dead on where you aim at around 100 feet)

Then add at the end of the file (if this doesn't exist just add it)

[Actor]

fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist=12288.0000

This will allow your arrows to hit very distant targets

These tweaks do work. I use them myself. Give them a try and I think you will be happy with the results. :)

I'll poke around with those entries Staind716 . Thank you for the heads up.

In that final entry, what is the default for the fVisibleNavmeshMoveDist and what does the increase provide distance wise. I don't want a game breaker, I just want t o be able to shoot out about 350 paces or meters with some reasonable effect on my target, hit or miss.

I tried the information you posted Staind and it seemed to make the distance shooting worse. I am whirlewind sprint distance now before my arrows strike. The critters and NPC's do react to the shots, but the arrows fly through targets with no hit or damage. You can watch the arrow and the shadow it casts as it passes through. Edited by Brandy_123

That's strange. I have been using these settings for a while and so are quite a few people that I know. This is the first I have heard about the arrows not doing any damage and the range actually being less. I will check into this some more and get back with you. Sorry you are having trouble with it.

I did some more testing with those setting. I still had problems, but after a reboot of my system, it started working. It is strange, but on a Mammoth they still take no damage at range. That was what I originally tested it on. I have to be within sprint distance for them to be hit. I want more arc to the shots, so i'll keep tweaking and see what I get.

Thanks again for sharing this. :)

No problem. I actually don't think I have ever shot a mammoth with those tweaks, so again I apologize that you had a problem with it. If you want more arc, just change back to your original settings for the ArrowTiltUpAngle and it will have the original arc. Or just play around with them until you find one you like. I'm glad you got it working and I'm going to check out the mammoth problem and see if I can figure anything out for that. Have fun! :smile:
