bluekatt
nintendo might have been denying this but few people cant deney that its true the gameboy is well and truly deadthe last hardware update or release to the gameboy line was the execrable gameboy advance micro in 2005a true piece of garbage the likes nintendo hasnt produced since the days of th virtual boy a gba reduced to rigorous and minum size which makes playing the damn thing almost impossible and it has not been the succes nintendo had hoped it to be because it was nothing more then making a greedy dig at the peopel who walked around with ipod mini's nintendo tried to lure ipod users away and it failed miserably because apple decided to kil the mini around the same time for the nano ( something i found hilarious )but it leaves the micro as the last ( and shamefull) entry in the gameboy line the DS has taken over quite firmly with well over 70 million units sold

I have the original brick, as well as the GBA myself. the days of 8-12 button gaming are long dead really. It will however always have a firm place among people using emulators (legally)since most based on newer systems just don't have all the bugs worked out, and transfering media is more difficult. Afterall, DS was designed to be the replacement of the Gameboy. And the PSP a close copy of the DS. People will always take better graphics, and more funtionallity over smaller size. Look at cellphones, instead of getting smaller, they're just adding more features now a days.
Triforce1
The reason the DS is outselling the PSP, and always will, is because it is easier to use, more intuitive, and the games are fun for a wider audience. Have you counted how many buttons are on the PSP? True, the grafics are much better, but that doesn't mean much to a young kid or an older person (at least many). That is also the reason that the Wii is outselling the PS3. Of course, this considering the legal issues the PS3 was involved in during its creation. The Wii is simply easier to use. Some games don't even require the use of buttons at all. I've heard it said that Nintendo is dying out, but I must laugh. Really, has Sony come up with a genuinely original game, or idea for their systems? Nintendo has LoZ, Mario, Metroid, SSB, and a whole host of other exclusive titles, and Microsoft has Halo and at least one or two others. What does Sony have? Okay, now to get down off of my soap box and quit with the pro-Nintendo rant... :P
Vagrant0
Really, has Sony come up with a genuinely original game, or idea for their systems? Nintendo has LoZ, Mario, Metroid, SSB,Just for clarification, all those titles mentioned have been around since either the original NES, or N64 days, so are hardly original these days. And, the reason why there aren't any titles like that for Playstation is because Sony's plan for the system has always been focusing on the hardware/OS portion of it, and has game production almost exclusivly to a 3rd party. When they did try making their own games, they failed miserably since they just ripped off concepts from others (crash). As a tradeoff, PS systems have always had support for things other than games, PS1 could play music CDs, PS2 could play CDs and DVDs (main reason I bought one), and their latest systems keep that trend, meanwhile other systems are almost exclusivly for games. But yeah, that touchscreen on the DS is alot easier to use (until you lose the stylus), so has a greater appeal to younger and older people. The range of game titles also reflects this since many are aimed at either children (girls particularly) and adults.

ianfreddie07
The Nintendo DS may have 6 buttons and a touchpad, but do you expect to use all of them in one instance? The thing about Nintendo games and game consoles are that... they may look simple, but are more fun than you would expect. That's the reason Nintendo was so popular. Simple but very fun. There will be more Mario, Pokemon and Super Smash Bros. sequels, and still regardless of how many times you've seen it, you'll have to think it's a timeless classic. Regarding Sony, Microsoft and other big names... Yes, they may be good, but sometimes people just want the light-hearted fun that Nintendo games have to offer. Vagrant0
I wouldn't say it is all motivated by failing profits. Many of those old titles are being released as pieces of nostolgia which will probably work well with the growing adult gaming market. And although they have been reusing the same character groups, they have managed to keep their games inovative, and have always made use of whatever new technology was available. And really, if you want to be critical, Nintendo did alot more Mario prostitution with the SNES than any other system. When he wasn't teaching people about history, or how to draw, it was ripping off the FF series, or playing his usual role in a platform game. I mean, comeon, wouldn't a new Contra game just have to kick ass?
doomjockey
Back to the semi-erstwhile Gameboy, I'm glad every DS still comes with a GBA port, which I thought must've pleased a lot of customers who probably expected to hang on to both systems. I'm not sure what's wrong with Nintendo in your eyes, Bluekatt, but they admittedly focus on a totally different demographic than Sony and Microsoft. Expounding upon ianfreddie07's comments, the Wii wasn't designed as a full-on media centre like the PS3 and 360 but as a gaming station and a gaming station only for purposes of mass appeal through simplification. The exact same goes for the DS vs. the PSP, which you've mentioned doesn't play movies or music in the interest of pure gaming. Simplified when compared to the PSP, but more features added in regards to Vagrant0's comments. Of course personal preference is obviously up to you, the person. WrathOfDeadguy
I don't think Game Boy is dead at all- I think that Nintendo could very well have just called the DS a Game Boy DS and that would've been that. Yes, it adds a touchscreen and some other nifty features, but it still follows the same formula as previous GB systems (it doesn't alter the system any more significantly than the addition of a color screen or shoulder buttons; it's just the next logical step). Changing the name of the system doesn't change what it is to the customer who keeps buying it; Nintendo probably just figured that the name was dead. The DS is a Game Boy, IMHO. Besides, even the older models are still around; they're the hardiest game systems ever made. I'll lay odds that there will still be plenty of Game Boys- even Color, Pocket, and classic brick models- decades from now, because the things just don't die It would take a hammer and some serious determination to break one; they're damn near bloody invincible. You can start reporting the death of the Game Boy when they actually become hard to find; I can't see that happening any time soon. Even most of the original cartridges are still fairly easy to come by; only the very most popular ones (Kirby, Tetris, etc) are actually difficult to track down. Of course personal preference is obviously up to you, the person.Ditto for me, also agree with Wrath_ofDeadguy01 "The DS is a Game Boy, IMHO."Nintendo was very smart to make the DS reverse computable if only Sony would have made their PSP the same. It is a balancing act, always has been in the video game industry.Price vs. technology and what will when people over the most.DS technology is not as high but the price is lower & the return of investment on games customers already own increases making the DS even more appealing. My kids have an old gameboy they were given & a few games, I think their next will be a DS because of being able to still play their old games & get new ones. Not to mention I've never bought any Gameboy games for myself yet & I like the idea of being able to go to Gamestop, flea markets or the local pawn shop & buy them cheaply.Do I like being able to play a movie on the PSP, yes but I'm not about to pay the same price for a PSP version of a movie as a DVD, plus with a little bit of my time I can put it on their Mp4 Player.Unless the PSP's internet capabilities are a lot better than the DS (I don't know) that would not persuade me either. So to sum up.....the name Gameboy may be dead, but definitely not the Nintendo hand held system.
