Consistent CTDs when attacked by any NPC.

Hello all,

 

I thought being a veteran at playing TES games and modding them would make me an expert at avoiding crashes, but I suppose not. I recently ran into a horrible bug where, after entering combat with any NPC, I immediately CTD whenever they attack and they're just about to hit me. No crash/error message of any kind, simply a quick crash to desktop.

 

I'm using Mod Organizer, and my load order is as follows:

I have not cleaned any of my mods, but I will shortly. Although I don't see why a few dirty edits can affect combat with any NPC like this. The only other consistent crashing I've ever had was when I had Thunderchild installed and I couldn't meditate in the library for more than 5 seconds without CTDing, but that's another topic entirely.

 

The last mods I installed before noticing this issue were Revenge of the Enemies, Morrowloot Ultimate, and Legacy of the Dragonborn, along with their appropriate patches, but even after temporarily uninstalling them and rebuilding my bashed patch nothing had changed and I still got the crashes.

 

Can anyone at all provide some help? I'm totally lost right now. I would greatly appreciate it!

UPDATE: It turns out that nearly ANY active effect applied to the player, whether I eat a butterfly, get hit by an arrow, or when Alduin initially shouts during the opening scene, causes the instant CTD. I'm speculating that perhaps this is related to CACO somehow, it modifies pretty much every active effect in the game.

 

I tested a little further and things like healing myself with a spell, eating some lavender, and getting hurt by a havok object aren't crashing, but fall damage DOES crash.

After doing more troubleshooting, I STILL get these crashes even without any mods at all, even the DLCs, active. The problem appears to be launching the game through Mod Organizer, whenever I launch through the regular skse_loader.exe, I get no crashes. But then I have no mods.

Good troubleshooting. Maybe it's a problem with your MO installation? Where are your Skyrim and MO folders installed? Is Skyrim installed outside of the Program Files (x86) folder?

You could try installing MO somewhere else and then copying your downloads, mods and profiles over. Here's a guide, in case you didn't install it properly or something.

Also, about your load order:

• When using NLVA, you should disable Vivid Weathers.esp. You only need the loose files from it.

aMidianBorn - Book of Silence - Content Addon has a list of things that need doing. See here and here for reference. They are:

• Get the 3 hotfixes and overwrite the original files
• Manually rename the Textures\actors\dlc02\ash directory to ashman
• Manually move and enable the Improved Closefaced Helmets patch (imp_helm_legend.esp) if you're using that mod
• Disable aMidianborn_Skyforge_Weapons.esp, Differently Ebony.esp and AMB Glass Variants Lore.esp

And of course, the usual memory fixes:

• Make sure you have the SKSE Memory Patch set up.
• Install Crash Fixes and be sure to read the description.
• Install Bug Fixes. Not absolutely required, but it has some nice fixes that aren't covered by USLEEP.
• Install Load Game CTD Fix. It fixes a thread race condition when loading save games.
• ENBoost - This gives you the memory management features of ENB without the visual effects processing. Not needed if you run an ENB.

Woah, thank you for all that support!

It turns out that the issue was related to my Skyrim.ini and SkyrimPrefs.ini. I just deleted them from my MO folder and replaced them with the vanilla ones in my My Games/Skyrim folder, and suddenly everything is better again! I have no idea how they caused these problems in the first place, but whatever!
