xbox 360 can no longer recognize the disk

I started playing this game a few months ago on the xbox 360 - at around level 10 while doing the second phase of the companions quest, the game crashed. My console was locked up and had to reboot the game to start play again. I thought it might be a bad disk, so I exchanged the disk for a new one, but still encountered the same problem. The game never crashed or showed any problems whatsoever except in that one particular quest at skyforge after i had given the blacksmith the sword and he was going to give me the shield to bring to his wife. I would occasionally try to complete that quest again but the game would always crash. Since I had continued play and was now at level 37, I basically had decided that I would play the rest of the game and just not do the companions quests although I would still try on occasion with the same result. This past week when I inserted the game disk, the console could not recognize the disk. After repeated attempts, the game finally loaded then crashed after a few minutes in a totally new area. I contacted Bethesda and they recommended I clear the cache. I was able to play again one time after doing this, but since then the console is not recognizing the disk any longer. I have tried countless times with no success. After contacting Bethesda again, they are telling me to send the disk in for a replacement, but I fear this will not solve the problem since I already tried that - now I don't even know if I would be able to start a new game. I would just prefer to keep playing the game I already started anyway since I invested many hours into it already. Can anyone tell me what exactly the problem is and how it can be solved? Thank you.

No - everything else has been working fine so far so I don't think there is any problem with the console. Thanks for your reply.
