Looking For Experienced Mentor

I've tried making posts like this on other sites in the past and not much has come of it, but I'm willing to try my luck again here.

You know, it's funny, technically speaking I've been involved in making mods for Bethesda games for ten or more years now (Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, F:NV, Skyrim, SSE) but I wouldn't call myself an experienced modder. I've either been part of group projects and performing minor tasks, or more or less making mods for myself, never anything complex.

I definitely know my way around the GECK/Creation Kit, but that's where my knowledge stops. I've never even really delved into scripting.

Lately, however, I've been inspired to really buckle down and teach myself how to make the kind of mods I really want to make. I'm going to have questions, things I can't figure out, problems I can't solve, however, and so I'd like to find someone with much more experience than I for me to bring such things to.

This wouldn't be without benefit, however. I'm totally willing to help out in whatever ways I can, and I can provide a few things most can't. I am, among many things, a studio musician (with a fairly decent home recording studio), a semi-professional composer with all the tools needed to also record any score I write, a fairly talented voice actor (again, with said home recording studio), and a published and award winning science fiction author.

Hey nice post ... but not really sure what you expect beyond just coming here and posting your question.

This place has a community to do what you are asking ... just post and be part of it.

If you really want to start understanding scripting ... this is what I did.

Study this ... http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php?title=Category:Functions

Meaning to quick browse ... get yourself familiar ...

Then watch the boards on how to do stuff ... or go look at the mod requests.

Then take your geck knowledge and see if you can do it ... and do the study on it.

Geck it and Game test it ... back forth ... pulling your hair out !

Then post it back to help that person out ... get back and forth feedback.

And low and behold ... you become better at using the Geck.

But still ... it takes an Idea of what to do first ... then you figure out how to make the geck do it.

Hence you can't just know all the geck intricacies and get stuff done. And often thinking about the geck minutia , will stunt your creative talent. It is a tight rope :hurr:  :geek:

I agree with Mktavish. Scripting is all about having an idea to script. So, find something that needs doing and try to get it done. Your knowledge of the game will help you in googling what you don't know how to do, and you have the forum when it's not working as you'd hoped. Best forum post results usually come from having a script ready and saying, 'What did I do wrong here?' and more so if your question hasn't been asked a thousand times with easily available examples of how to do it.

Also, Google tip: I've found that the best way to look for modding help on Google is to type geck with some key words relevant to what I'm trying to do.

But no, I don't think anyone's going to mentor you, if I'm honest. Which really is fine. If I'm wrong, then great, but if I'm right, Google, the BethSoft pages, and the forum should be enough to get you through. Well, that and a load of patience.

So sounds like you know more than you are giving yourself credit for. Mentor ? shMea!

You just need to ask some questions and get some input .

Since there is so many ways to do stuff with the geck ... it is very malleable to the user.

Getting stuff done depends a lot on the user to be able to think the process through.

So having some one else interject their logic process into telling you how you should think it through.

Of course that is not going to really teach you how to use your own logic process to see it through.

IMO ... the first thing to learn about scripting is the "Begin" blocks

if ya got those then we can move on to show you stop gate variables.
