SuperAxilla
When I was a kid, "Back To The Future" came out and I fell in love with DeLorean. Here in Richmond they even had a rare auto showroom with a DeLorean built just like the one in the movie. I would stare at it through the window for hours trying to scheme up some way to come up with $100K to buy it. Recently, I stumbled across the DMC website. Some may find this cool. According to the site, they are planning to release a new custom build configurator for building a client a brand new Delorean, based on a combination of new and older original parts. Pretty interesting! They even unveiled a new electric DeLorean at the Texas showroom. It looks like the once limited availability of the DeLorean may now change as they plan on building new models. I haven't tried the configurator yet because I'm a little worried how expensive they would be, but I suppose it will allow you customize the car in any way you'd like. I was surprised to see that they currently offer three pre-owned originals ranging from $45K to $55k, which I don't think is bad at all. Albeit parts are surely expensive as well as any maintenance. Understatement! The pre-owned originals have around only 1500 miles on them. My regret is that I really don't think the IRS would let me write it off as a business car, so my only option would be to sell one (or probably both) of my kidneys  I think it it would be worth it to get one just so I can take it to Jiffy Lube and ask them to replace the "Flux Capacitor". I searched the entire parts division of the site and no they don't even have the Flux Capacitor. Shame  Bottom line, I'm pretty stoked about this and I think it's pretty cool. Not exactly the most practical of things to buy, but cool nevertheless. I figure there are probably a lot DMC fans on this site, so maybe they'd enjoy drooling over the prospect like I did. Thor.
Hmm Try Overhauling the engine, turbo and so on. Apparently they are a good drifter, RR drive for one. :thumbsup:If ya ever think of getting one for real Edited March 20, 2012 by Thor.
Vagrant0
Supposedly, they were used in that movie because the car itself wasn't particularly good, not even by 80's standards. I think it was even originally used as a sort of joke since the company was defunct before Back to the Future was made. The main reason why most even know the car is still around is because of the movie and a small cult of people who have collected, rebuilt, or restored those cars. HeyYou
Thought the original deloreans used a ford motor? Parts for that should still be cheaply available. Who owns the company now??
Thor.
I think this might explain it for you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h72dyXpSMqs
SuperAxilla
Yeah, overhauling would definitely be needed if I was planning on driving it a lot. Cars with turbo (especially 1980's models) are notorious for problems. As much as I would like an original, I would be deathly afraid to drive it. Say $45k for the original and then tack on an extra $25k+ for maintenance (extra $100 for an old shaggy dog and name him Einstein  ), etc. Although the parts aren't that bad from what I see on the site. Who knows? Maybe this "New Build Program" addresses and corrects a lot of the problems the originals had. An original would strictly be a collectors car and I would just keep it garaged, whereas a "New Build" might be drive-able. I can't find anywhere on the site where DMC is owned or gets parts from Ford, but it does say "DMC 1997-2011" Copyrighted. It could be that before '97, Ford may have sold the parts. I;m not sure. As for it's use in the movie, that wouldn't surprise me if they used it as a joke. But it kinda backfired on them if it did and made it popular. Let's face it, the DeLorean probably wouldn't be popular today if it weren't for the movie. I did find this in movie facts: "The DeLorean was deliberately selected for its general appearance and gull wing doors, in order to make it plausible that people in 1955 would presume it to be an alien spacecraft." Mmmm. Gull wing doors! Still, the original DMC is a tough build with lots of problems. So, I'm interested to see how this whole "New Build Program" plays out. I guess I could sell my car and get one, but probably not a good move. Albeit, it might be worth it for the occasional drive. People will be like "Wow!" and maybe some chicks would dig it  I'd love to, but I can't rationally justify doing it. An investment? Maybe I should put a poll on this thread. Surely the majority would vote "pro-DMC", so then I could possibly delude myself into thinking I should get one! (Shrug). Ehh, the BttF jokes would also make it a little worthwhile. Bottom line: It is my dream car and has been since I was a kid. I've always idolized it. I know it has serious issues (understatement), but I've always wanted one. Maybe this should be my "mid-crisis" poor descision
HeyYou
Ooops, my mistake, engines were 2.8 liter V-6's source from..... Renault........ Whopping 130 horsepower in US trim. In a roughly 3000 pound car...... that does not translate to neck snapping performance, even by 1980's standards.
Thor.
So your going to turn it into a series 2 Delorean and to 195HP, Then add several customizations like racing Spoiler, specialized Sport-racing tires. Weight reduction to make the Horsepower Worthwhile, and add Custom racing Transmission to make that HP more available.    Also special clutch, LSD and so on. It'll cost you up to 100.000cr lo Also Don't forget that racing muffler, turbo and radiator.. Edited March 21, 2012 by Thor.

That would be interesting  Now that would make it worthy of a license plate that says "FLUXCAP" or "121GWTZ" :-)
