Armor Mods

Adipose

Recommended Posts

Some years back, I was doing a bit of research into the nature or characteristics of suits of armor. One point that stuck in what little mind I have was that the really ornate armor, replete with horns, large pauldrons and other items that stick out, were probably worn for more ceremonial occasions and less likely to be used in combat. The rational for that statement was that the ornamental items would act to catch weapons that were used to strike the wearer, thus causing additional force and damage to be transmitted. Take a helmet for example. A smooth, curved surface on a Viking helmet (diminutive intended) would do a better job of deflecting blows than would an ornate, horned surface. In addition, a nice handy set of horns gives an opponent something to grab and hold while doing their level best to cut the wearer's throat. Also, such a strike could easily cause the wearer to have difficulty seeing if the helmet was to be wrenched out of alignment. Hmmm, wonder if such a move could be modded? Just saying. Okay, finished now.

What you say is true Mr. Adipose. I cringe when I see the newfangled so-called Spartan shield with the embossed emblem. Just right for catching a spearpoint and forcing the shield aside or angling it up into the Hoplite's face. I have a book that covers the highly ornate armour found in the Dresden museum, all used for ceremonial purposes only. With real battle armour you want the sort that will turn a weapon not catch it and guide it to the target.
