Constant CTDs after so many hours

Among the many many bugs I've experienced playing this game, this ones just killing me. This is my second attempt at a playthrough, and I've experienced it both times. Basically heres whats happening: I get pretty advanced into the game (first playthrough about 150 hours, second about 100 hours) and I reach a point where my game crashes constantly no matter what I do. Now during the playthrough I had the occasional ctd and had to work around numerous bugs, but i could always keep playing. But then I reach a certain point and bam, ctd ctd ctd. My first playthrough I had about 150 hours and this problem started right about the time my save files reach 20 mb in size. I did some research and heard about this unsolved bug that happens when your savefiles get that big. After a fruitless search for a fix, I found a mod that supposedly reduces savegame bloat and started a new playthrough. Now I'm experiencing the same problem again, and this time my saves are only about 13 mb. It seems to be irrelevent what or where I'm at ingame for these ctds to occur. For example, I reach the point where I can go no further and the game constantly crashes. I load a save from an ingame day or two before, and i can play for an ingame day and it ctd again, regardless of whether I'm riding around the reach all day or I sit in Windhelm and wait for 24 hours. I got some mods running, but I've had them from the beginning, havent had anything recently. I've updated my video drivers, tried using the 4gb LAA, uninstalled all my mods, uninstalled and reinstalled skyrim, fiddled with the graphic settings, changed the sound settings down to 16 bit 44100, sacrificed a baby goat, and prayed to Talos, with no goddamn effect! I've yet to make it past the first step or two in the main questline or the civil war quests, since I like to save those for lategameplay. I've found a million skyrim ctd threads but none that address this particular issue.

I'm playing offline with the original 1.1.21 exe, windows 7 32 bit, nvidia geforce 8600 gt, intel core2 quad cpu.

I'm hoping beyond hope that someone can help me before I shitcan this game and go back to Morrowind. Thanks

a question... ? do you have deleted some mods ?

i have experimented a problem like this, nothing to view whit the savegame,

For me when i have erased some mods, the game have begin to crash always, and i found it's one of the mod they have always well worked before, for me this mod will be the two sound files of sos, after deleted this two file all going well, so even if your game have always well going since the start it's peharp a small thing like this they have changed big thing..., i suggest you to look if it your mod again...

I have exact the same problem. I played Skyrim from the start with no issues (steam preload buy) and have completed the game while encountering several bugs but nothing game-breaking or just painful. Since I got some updates wich fixed a lot of quest related bugs I decided to start anew with a better understanding of the perks and what is recommend to skill up. All went fine for about 80 hours of gameplay and then Skyrim has been updated to 1.4.0.23 or so and the pain started. At first casual CTD's but when i progressed further into the game I encountered them every few minutes no matter what - quick travel, resting, riding, running, fighting. I tried everything, new graphics driver, altering audio/graphic settings, deinstall/reinstall game etc. - nothing worked. Here are my conclusions: It had nothing to do with mods (I tested it intensively with new save games etc), no problem with the graphic driver/card (everything else runs smooth as silk), same goes to soundcard/settings, directX ok, OS ok, Hardware flawless....

Bethesta just f***ed up with the game update since I can run the game fine after reinstalling and not updating (disabled steam auto-update and cloud)....voila! It may help or not but dont update if it runs fine - this is a very old wise back from Windows 95 (never change a running system)

My System:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 3GHz

ASUS M2N-SLI Deluxe

4 GB GSkill DDR2 6400

Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 (295.73)

Creative SB X-Fi Xtreme Music

Windows XP SP3 32-Bit

  • 2 weeks later...

try going online and getting the updates.

Yeah, you need to log on to Steam and update your game.

That was an incredible helpful post, repeating someone elses comment. I see where you get 1600+ post since you became a member. You remind me of Sigourney Weaver's role in Galaxy Quest where her job was to repeat the computer comments.
