Nedius
Hi all, After a long windows update yesterday, I loaded up the computer to play some FO4. However, the game crashes to desktop during the loading process. The game loads to the main menu fine, and when I click either 'continue' or 'load', the game switches to the 'loading' VDSG Catalogue screen. However, all the text details are 'Lookup Failed' on any screen that appears, and after a few seconds, the game crashes to desktop. Any ideas how to fix without losing all the saved games? Edit: Have now tried the 'verify file' via steam tip - didn't help. Edit 2: Ok...found an odd thing... all the textures in the Data folder are listed as shortcuts, rather than actual files! What could cause this? I chose a file at random and tried to locate it. the short cut is trying to send me to 'C:\Games\Nexus Mod Manager\Fallout 4\Mods\VirtualInstall\107185\textures\weapons\dartgun\DGReciever_S.dds' Edited December 31, 2017 by Nedius
KnorKater
You could try to verify the game files via Steam (right click on the game in the library->properties->local files->verify integrety or something similar). It'll download any missing or corrupted files again. Since the savegames are synchronized with the steam cloud you don't lose them. If you're in doubt, make a backup (c:\users\username\documents\my games\fallout 4). Maybe copy the Data directory in the game folder, too, if you installed any mods and fear losing them, even tho this shouldn't happen.
Nedius
Just the Verify files thing. Didn't help. :-(
KnorKater
If you have a fast connection, you could move the fallout 4 game folder and the folder in your user documents elsewhere (as a quick backup method), export your load order via NMM, and then reinstall it via Steam. If the vanilla version still doesn't work, the update likely caused similar issues for other people and you have to wait for a windows update fix. KnorKater
But, uh, before doing that try to disable all mods first. The usual first step with such issues. Sorry, I'm tired. :v Your problems could quite possibly be the result of conflicting or corrupted mods, or just mods missing some files.
willyb9
Try loading the game offline or disconnected from the internet and see if that still causes CTD. looks like the last update for fo4 and/or the recent windows update has been causing CTD on load for players in eastern europe (not sure where you're located). since i'm in the US, haven't done the recent windows update yet and am playing on an older version of fo4, i can't verify if any of this will be helpful for you personally but you may check out this thread for some possible solutions: https://bethesda.net/community/topic/147688/eastern-europe-players-games-ctd

KnorKater
Yes, that's very weird. Those files should be in your data directory. You should move everything inside the numbered folders there.
