Hello everyone, I've been having some very persistent problems with the Creation Kit for Fallout 4.

I'm new around the Nexus forums, a stranger bought me a copy of Fallout 4 for PC so I can start modding, and I have to fix this because I owe him that much.

The first problem I ran into was fixed: the language files. The Creation kit actually does start up now, and I am able to load data files.

Whenever I am trying to load a cell (any actually), the CK goes into a "not responding"-state. Sometimes it takes a full painful fifteen minutes where I'm unsure if it'll even load the cell or not. Sometimes the cell does load, and when it does, my FPS is extremely low, up to a point where it crashes itself. I have managed to work with the layer system, but my Creation Kit session is still very unstable.

I decided to ask an acquaintance who's in the same Discord group as I am since he has more experience with the CK, this is what he had to say:

The issue is that the render window has a hardcoded memory allocation limit (afaik) it only has 176 Megs or so

External (and many internal) cells quickly eat up 2000 Megabytes and more, so your system is going wild by permanently loading and unloading data, which causes the game to crash
err CK
Haven't found a solution so far, the only things I found on the net was to change a few settings about how many cells are pre-rendered and modders advise to use the layer system to hide some assets in the render window unless you really need them
Cannot help you with that, however, as I haven't used the layer system so far. I only know that it exists
The most important thing to know about CK: Haste makes waste. Do NOT click anything inside the CK windows until it finished loading, otherwise it will crash immediately
loading a mod or rendering a cell can take a lot of time (up to several minutes!), so be VEEEEEEEEEEEEEERY patient
So, from what I understand is that the CK uses too much memory. I've read that even people with great PC's cannot run CK any better than I can. So my question is, how do you guys deal with this? Are there any tips for people who want to alter exterior cells?
EDIT: I just realized this should've been posted in a different sub-forum.

When you launch the Ckit and before you load any files go to Preferences Render window tab and set the "Grids to load" to 3 the default is 5. I've found doing this help a lot. however for some features like landscape editing and generating Pre-Combined and Pre-Vis you'll still need to use the Default 5.

With the Grids to load set to set to 5 your loading a 5x5 grid of cells which can tax your system especially in places like downtown. Setting the grids to load to 3 only loads a 3x3 grid of cells.

hope that helps.

That actually helped me out a lot, so thank you! By the way, I love the Beantown interiors project.

So, to anyone else out there who is struggling with issues like this, here is what I did:

I have a few more issues with the CK that I can't fix myself and I haven't found anyone who can help me out yet, but I don't want to go off-topic when this is my second post here, so that'll come later.

just ask your questions, Other then this should have gone in the Creation Kit forum (I can forgive you the mistake being that your new! ) it seems like an appropriate place for you to ask. You did start the topic.

I also use the layer system extensively, I create new layers for all of my added objects so I can turn off anything I don't want to mess with or accidentally edit. I use photoshop for my job every day so the layer system was second nature to me and I love the feature. This does also help with performance.

Well, okay. I've been having an awful issues in Creation Kit since a few days now. The problem is that all models are black. I've been toying around with the light bulb icon and the enable sky-button, yet these don't change anything (except for making window-textures a little brighter).

I've been told by someone to check my ambient lighting in: World > Cells... > BostonAirportExt11. Then, in the menu that is showing up, there should be a few tabs, one of which should contain the ambient lighting, however the only tab I can see in this menu is Common data. I was advised to restart the Creation Kit but this hasn't fixed this issue, and its really difficult to work on a location when all of the objects are black. Can you help me out?
