Cheating

So I'm sort of curious what people around here consider "cheating" in Morrowind. I'm using a couple mods in my game (most of them just change the faces of folks), including the Archmage's Tower in Pelagiad as my base of ops. Would this be considered cheating? It's just so nice to have a place where you can sit back, relax, admire your stolen loot...

For some reason, though, after enchanting a couple of items that I really wanted (levitation and open locks amulets), things that you don't need mods to do and are an integral part of the game, it almost feels like I'm cheating, since now I don't need to search around for scrolls or potions, or even practice my lock-picking skills.

Thoughts on this?

cheating, as i define it, is some sort of manipulation of the game that gives you an unfair advantage (thus tilting the balance of gameplay). things like adding a full set of daedric armor to the middle of seyda neen for you to just come and pick up is cheating. amping the damage or armor class of say chitin armor to 200 is cheating. and finally using the console to add itmes, amp skills and attributes, and use god mode is cheating. most mods are really good about keeping the game balanced, however there are some out there that are simple mods to the game to make things more powerful. for things like added strongholds and such i usually make my own to fit my character, but for bigger stuff just think about what lvl your character is and whether or not it is really necessary to have that 5 story palace. i often find my characters will take up residence in bandit caves and ancestral tombs because there is generally a lot of living space and there are plenty to choose from.

only things that i consider cheating is using "unbalancing" mods or console commands (except to fix bugs). an unbalancing mod for instance wud be one where it gives u all the items in the game, or a really powerful item that can kill any enemy in the game. not just 2 display ur loot, even i have one of those, tho it includes a training dummy which i choose not 2 use cos i consider that a little unbalancing ^_^

Entering in console codes for anything but fixing bugs.

Using mods specifically designed for powergaming (i.e. the sword of utter kickass.)

Housing mods are not cheating, though may include items to facilitate it. I am for house teleporters, as it seems a natural expansion of the intervention spells.

The only mods besides the face changes and the archmages tower I've stuck in are the ones that make the wild animals (rats and various others) act more realistic, and the adventurers mod that adds more random NPCs all over the place and makes people go inside at night.

Although, I must admit that I have visited Tito in Dagon Fel to sell various high priced items. But that's only cuz I think it's somewhat unrealistic not to have at least one super rich merchant in the game. I mean, what's the point of having armor that's worth 180,000 gold if you can never get more than 10K for it from the richest merchant out there, Senior Talking Mudcrab.

They should have a smuggler in some hidden basement somewhere in Vivec or Balmora that has a couple hundred thousand...but he has to like you, or you have to do some quests for him before he'll buy stuff off of you. Sort of gain his trust. The more he likes you, the more he'll buy off of you. Something like that.

I took over a room in the Vivec Mages Guild as my home base. While it is getting a bit cramped with all the potions(around 50 "seen" bottles, 500 actual), ingredients(spilling out of closets, drawers, and baskets), keepsakes (I can't bear to part with my beloved glass armor (restored to mint condition) and those trippy Dwemer artifacts), and piles of stuff I just can't sell because everyones too damn poor, I absolutely love the location). I don't have to set my recall mark there, since I'm usuallly only a hop and skip (or Intervention and skip) away from one of the Mage's Guilds.

About the topic: Recently, I've been questioning my use (abuse?) of the potion system. Luckily, I was nearly level 20 before I started making potions, and had completed main quests up to getting named Nerevarine and Hortator. However, my second batch of potions did make it possible for me to kill Vivec with my bare hands (having an unarmed skill level of 12) and Daggoth Ur without fearing for my life.

If you're wondering how, it's a simple matter of addition (that seems to have no limit). My first potions were barely better than your average Quality potion. But, when I was looking up ingredient combinations, I found out that potion making involved not only your Alchemy skill, but your Intelligence too. So, I got a bunch of Exclusive Fortify Intelligence potions, used my Fortify Intelligence 20 points spell, and then made a couple Fortify Intelligence potions. Sure enough, they were quite a bit better than my other potions, so I drank them and did it again, until my intelligence was about 800. Then I made all my other potions fortifying stats, restoring health and magicka, etc.

Well, the third time around, I pumped my Intelligence up to 1300 and made some killer potions and tossed aside my second generation potions. These potions add 100+ to my stats, restore 20-30 points of health and magicka per second, and generally make me invincible. They very nearly ruined the game for me (of course, I had already saved Vvardenfell). I have been saved by the addition (with Bloodmoon?) of a difficulty setting (which I ramped up to 100), and now can hardly survive without my potions (and sometimes die anyway).

In conclusion to this long-winded story:

I think taking advantage of the potion system (thankfully the enchanting system appears immune to pumped stats and there are no potions for pumping skills) is in effect cheating, and will not be taking advantage of the systems weakness with my next character.

Cheating is in the eye of the beholder, as we have no one to answer to for it but ourselves. I do agree with everyone though in that using the console to add gold, skills, items, etc. is cheating. Also, house mods with a merchant who has 5,000,000 gold are cool but definetly fall under "cheating." It comes down to whether or not you really want to play the game, or just goof around and have a good time. Running takes so long and we can only carry so much because that is the way it must be. Part of the fun for me is that it feels as physically real as possible and is therefore much more enjoyable. It takes the fun out of the game to cheat. I have, like I'm sure everyone has whether they admit it or not, tried to play at least once with a totally souped up mega-character who has every cheat in the game...and after about 10 minutes it's just not fun anymore.

yeah i sometimes make a cheat char... armed with one of my unbalancing mods... i have one mod where i make all sorts of fun items so i can have some fun messing around with the NPCs like the one which can make entire towns instantly fall under ur command, then spawning an ogrim titan and watch the town go into an epic battle against it and get thrashed :D very fun for about 30 mins then u just go bak 2 ur normal legit ways ^_^
