The Fallen trap bug *Spoiler Alert*

I am having a problem with the part of The Fallen quest (MQ301) where I must trap Odahviing. I can call him from the balcony, get him to land with Dragonrend, and then lure him into the courtyard. At that point, the massive yoke in the ceiling is supposed to fall and trap the dragon, but it never does. The two guards stationed at the pull chains instead continually draw and sheath their bows. I've tried to pulling the chains myself, but to no avail. It's quite frustrating, and not the first of major quest bugs I've encountered. I'd rather not have to use a console command to get through. Does anyone have a fix?

I have completed the game several times and never encountered that particular bug. I do find some of the issues are self induced. By that I mean, some mods you have loaded may be intervening with the vanilla action.

I do not have a solution, but start with your mods. There's no easy or sure fire way to troubleshoot which one is causing the issue. Its all hit and miss. Start disableing them and see where the problem lies. Its a painfully long process. I hate to add this, but with mods, You never know for sure what game file was overwritten. Its possible disabling the faulty mod may not correct the problem.

Thank you for the quick, detailed reply. I don't run any mods, just the vanilla game, but I have used the following console commands: showracemenu (to change hair options), and setstage in order to complete the bugged Companions questline, and the cutscene in the Dragonrend quest. Would these console commands have corrupted the game? And if so, would a full re-installation of the game fix it (keeping, of course, my save games)?

Here's an update:

I was able to get past the bug in this scene by using a console command: "setstage mq301 180" and then "setstage mq301 200". I did this first while on the "porch" with the dragon, and nothing happened. After reloading the game to try again, I exited the porch by re-entering Dragonsreach, then used the console commands. When I went back outside to the porch, the dragon was trapped under the yoke trap and I was able to continue on with the quest.

Hopefully this will help anyone else that is experiencing this specific bug (yoke trap will not fall, guards stuck in a loop of sheathing/unsheathing weapons). Now I just hope I can complete the main quest without any more hiccups. *sigh* My friend who plays the game on X-Box hasn't encountered any bugs...which leads me to think that Skyrim was developed for the x-box console first, PC second.

Thank you so much morganrd13 !!!!!

"setstage mq301 180" was enough to fix that bug.

It seems like you and I are the only 2 people in the world to encounter it...

I couldn't finish Oblivion because of bugs on the main quest, and it's not the first bug I have to bypass in Skyrim using setstage command, so I thought it was going to happen again...

So thank you so much for your help !!

"What the hell, pull this fu#@ing chains, you as#~ole !" :wallbash:
