Skyrim freezes for a few seconds

I KNOW THE SOLUTION!!!

REMOVE THE SCRIPTS FOLDER INSIDE THE DATA FOLDER THIS IMMEDIATELY FIXES THE PROBLEM!

I dont know if this makes some mods not work properly but i have played for 10 minutes now and it has not lagged once and havent encountered any problems

edit: THIS MADE MY SAVE FILE GO FROM 105MB TO 8MB

Sorry - i reloaded my most bloated save game (195MB) - did as you suggested - and it's still saving at 195MB

but after going back to my last non-bloated save and playing forward to the same point with the same mods installed i am holding steady at 8MB

Glad your solution worked for you though - and now i have caught back up with myself I am happy too

thanks

the only way I was able to repair or fix this problem was a complete wipe. With that, I mean to also registry clean with something like CCleaner. STEAMypile dumps lots and lots of crap and garbage in your registry, almost virus like. If you dont clean this out, on your reload, any corrupted pointer (that don't get overwritten) will net you nothing. You will be back with corrupted game saves. The world file is saved on each character, so any corrupted world issues will be again launched upon using an old save. Move all the old saves to a different folder. After you remove (not just deleted) skyrim AND STEAMypile, clean the reistry and REBOOT.

After all that is done, then reload STEAMypile and Skyrim. Do to having to be inundated by all the STEAMypile garbage, probing, monitoring and system usage they so freely do to you and your system, then subject yourself to a 4 hours download of a game you don't own because they claim any and all rights to - above and beyond the $60 lease for the game you opted into.

Remember to not use old game saves.

I was experiencing this too with 3 to 8 second freezes every 50 or so seconds and NOTHING, no amount of tweaking, adjusting, reinstalling etc would fix... Saw a few posts mentioning save bloating and after checking the saves folder saw that most of the recent saves were only around 30mb so dismissed that theory. Foolish of me!! Backed up my saves, deleted them in the saves folder, started a new game and Skyrim is running as beautifully as it was and should be!! :P

It just sucks that some of us are experiencing save bloat with such small saves!! I even tried Mart's save de bloater but it didn't fix anything! But I'm enjoying the game from the start again as it's like a nice old familiar friend to revisit!! LOL!!

  • 1 month later...

I fixed mine by going back to a small save. I also cleaned out the scripts folder. Its working just fine for now. But I'm concerned I'll be back in the same situation over time again, I save a lot!!

Does anyone know for sure that its ENB? (I use that) Or what exactly is causing this bloating? I have saved over old saves before, is that it?

I had this problem a while ago on an earlier version of Skyrim, with earlier versions of the major mods. Save game file size should not really be over 10 MB, unless you have logged many, many hours on a specific character, and have been running a lot of mods. Most of mine are under 5 MB, and I run with 200 mods. When I had the problem, I fixed it by disabling large mods such as OCS and WZ, moving to an interior cell, and sleeping for 31 days to allow all cells to reset. This fixed it, and the problem did not reoccur. I'm not running ENB now. My scripts folder is full of files too. People with these issues might want to share their mod lists to look for some common element.

It's possible that 1.6 did something, it's more likely mods, but it could be both. Search for the save game scanner, it's mentioned in a thread on this forum. If you can't find it, I'll find it and post a link. It allows you to see what is in your save games. I had a character with save games that were over 100 MB. Even running from an SSD, it was causing 1-2 second freezes several times a minute. I don't know what the game is doing with the save game file when you are simply playing and not saving, but something is definitely going on even when you aren't saving, quicksaving, or autosaving. You have to get that save file size down. Try making a clean save. You may have to temporarily disable large overhaul mods or mods that add a lot of npc's or creatures, get to an interior cell (such as a house), and sleep for 31 days so that all the cells reset. The latest theory is that scripts are actually the cause of the save file bloat, not dropped weapons and corpses. The scanner will allow you to see which it is. Also for sleeping that long, there is a mod that makes it easy. The default sleep interface only allows sleeping or waiting in 24 hour increments. The mod allows for 31 days at a time.
