Copying from one cell into another

So I ran across this: Modder's Resource - Lucky 38 Presidential Suite Overhaul and am considering using it. I'm new to this and have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm sure it's very obvious but I can't figure it out.

The instructions are: To move my stuff into the Lucky 38 Suite's cell just copy and paste it into the cell via keyboard commands

Attempting to do that does nothing, so I'm doing something wrong.

-Open GECK

-Save

-File>Data>Open as active file

-Select '00TestArea'

-Select everything in it, Ctrl+C

-Go to Lucky 38 Suite's cell, Ctrl+V

Anyone know what I'm missing?

Also, if you're not used to working with the GECK, two things you should know:

1. Don't start any IDs with numbers (like 000TestArea - that's wrong; don't do it; scripts will not work right at least some of the time if you do).

2. Anything you touch is liable to make a record and save it to your .esp, so be careful to save often but also reload if you'vetouched something you don't need to have touched. It will get an asterisk next to its name if it's being modified and saved to your file. You can and should clean your mod with FNVedit before release anyway, which will take care of this, but if your mod is small and you don't want to do that or it's not for public release, you may want to heed this precaution.

So the numbers thing is good to know, because I was starting to wonder if it's common - the last two mods I've been looking at have IDs beginning with numbers.

Should I be renaming the Name or the Editor ID of the cell? I would assume it needs to share an Editor ID with the Lucky 38 cell I'm attempting to change?

Hum...not sure of your exact goal here. Are you trying to integrate this into an existing cell? If you want to use it basically as is, it may be easiest just to drop in some door or something in the Lucky 38 that leads to this. If you want it to replace another cell, then you will indeed need to copy everything manually, because literally replacing one cell with the other is generally a bad idea for any scripts, vanilla or modded, that would want to use that cell. What I'm saying is, you'd want to take the assets and place them in there where they would look good/fit/&c.

Truth is, I'm not all that familiar with the suite in the game and I mayn't be the best person to tell you what would break. On the mod page, the author goes on to talk about a pretty detailed process that they unfortuntaely don't detail very much. You have companion markers to mind as well, so my idea of just making it a new room entirely wouldn't work with that. It's possible you may have better luck asking on the mod page. Otherwise, you'll have to start learning the GECK and try not to break anything. It'll be a bit of a process unless someone that really knows the suite can help you out.

I really appreciate you taking time to look at it! I'm mostly annoyed with the lack of companion-friendly player homes and looking into making one. I'm probably going to break it a few hundred times, but trial and error teaches pretty well.

I will inquire on the mod page, the author hadn't been on in a few months, but if he comes back on hopefully he'll be ok with explaining a bit.

Thank you!

If you're comfortable with a bit of the aul' trial and error, you'll do great. I would hazard to guess that's what most of us have done, and look how we turned out (if this were a film, it would cut to one of us playing checkers whilst on fire, one of us begging forgiveness of a shoe, and one of us hammering away in hexadecimal but really only typing BABEFACE over and over again).

The more experience you get with the GECK, the more you'll realize that it's just a secret Vault-Tek experiment designed to test modder's frustration levels.

Anyway, CTRL-C and CTRL-V should work. That will put everything from the test cell into the Lucky 38 Presidential Suite's cell, but that's all that it is going to do. After you finish adding your own custom stuff to the empty rooms and changing around whatever you want to change, you'll want to move the elevator door in the existing Presidential Suite over to where you've pasted the new stuff. Make sure you get the teleport marker along with it. There are also some other markers that you'll want to move, like Victor's marker so that he'll stand next to your relocated elevator door. I don't remember if there are any others.

You will also need to navmesh the new area, otherwise your companions won't be able to use it.
