Duelling Spell

Introduction

 

Skyrim is a game that speaks to the imagination. And when you add mods, those fantasies just go insane. You want to be a pirate captain, a stealthy assassin, a fearless warrior and preferably all at the same time.

But, ah...at some point we all reach a limit and must stay realistic.

 

Back in Oblivion, the moment I got my hands on a mod that put in a rapier, I toyed with the idea of duelling. The idea that you and only you fight one person, even if there are others present.

 

The concept

 

I am not experienced in modding, but I have basic understanding of what we are capable of doing and what not.

So, as to achieve combat scenario's that closely resembles duelling, here are a few requirements that I have subjected my idea's to.

 

  1. The duel must be able to take place/be activated in any location.
  2. It must be able to take place without interference from other NPC's. This includes guards, hostile NPC's other then the one you desire to duel, and even your own Followers.
  3. Activation/starting of duel mode will most likely be through spell/power until better methods can be found.

 

To achieve this, I have come up with a number of concepts that seem do-able with these requirements.

 

 

1. Utilize the fistfight system

 

I have no idea if this piece of scripting is retrievable, and/or re-usable to be implemented in a mod for a different situation.

But I am sure you get the idea now.

 

The game turns to a similar fistfight mode, only now allowing weapons to be used.

Whether this is limited to melee weapons, excluding ranged or magic is something I don't know is achievable.

 

This mode should already have scripting in place, lended from the fistfight mode, to prevent other NPC's from interfering. I don't know how well this will play when forced to an already hostile group of enemies.

Activation will most likely either be spell, or conversation topic in case of a non-hostile NPC.

 

 

2. Stop time

 

If I am not mistaken, when using the Stop Time shout (or spell/ring if you use a mod for it) the player receives a hidden buff that allows him/her to move only slightly slower, while the rest of the world seems slowed much, much more.

 

This could function, in spell-form, as a duel system too.

Cast the "duel" spell to your desired target, and time will be slowed down for everyone, while you and your target receive the required buff to move at normal speed. Effectively enabling you to duel at your own leisure.

 

My one worry is that it would be exploitable to attack other, slowed, hostile NPC's in this mode. I wonder if there is a script or buff that will dynamically prevent you from dealing damage to other NPC's?

 

 

3. Dueling Arena (in an Oblivion dimension?)

 

My least favorite idea, but also one I felt I should mention.

 

When casting the Dueling Arena spell, you and your target will be moved to another area, where you two will meet privately in combat. Upon defeat, the dead body and the player will be transported back to where they originally were. Allowing the player to loot the body.

 

No sense also applying this effect to the player, as it would force an unnecessary loading time upon your death cam.
