COOLJ808
So I keep seeing patches and information about a 4GB RAM patch, so I was wondering, what about users with more than 4GB? Is there a way to benefit from this as far as Skyrim goes? I hope I didn't waste my money getting more than that. Any help would be appreciated, thank you. ishmaeltheforsaken
No. Only 64-bit executables can access more than 4GB of RAM.
natula123
No. Only 64-bit executables can access more than 4GB of RAM. How do we do this? Because steam always installs to x86 and I don't know how to start skyrim as 64-bit
ishmaeltheforsaken
You can't. Skyrim is 32-bit. That's why the first word of my answer was "no" ;p
COOLJ808
Thank you ishmaeltheforsaken.Would you happen to know of a way around that?I went out of my way to get a system with 32 GB hoping Skyrim would be able to use more of it than 4GB. :/
Beach Terror
32GB of RAM?! Why on Earth would you possibly need that much?
Outlandstalker
Why not? Ram is so cheap at the moment, why not buying that much? I bought 16 GB for 40 euros 3 months ago. Back to topic...There is no workaround for that 4 GB limitation. Skyrim is developed for 32 bit and it will only support 32 bit until Bethesda makes a 64 bit executable. It is a pity that some developers still program their programs for 32 bit only. Skyrim would run much better if it supports 64 bit. COOLJ808
Do you mean in a patch or a whole new game?
Outlandstalker
Bethesda has to patch their executable to support 64 bit, but that means they have to rework most parts of it. Basicly its a whole new game :)
NegativeInterestRate
As others have said there is no way to make Skyrim use more than 4GB due to the need for 64-bit addressing (This also includes video memory so if you have a 1GB gfx card you're really only using 3GB of that 32GB!). That said if you want to put that RAM to some use you could create a virtual RAM drive and install Skyrim there. It won't make Skyrim use more RAM than it can address but it will improve load times for anything Skyrim loads off the HDD (because some of your RAM is pretending to be an HDD). Just don't switch off the computer or the installation will disappear (it's still volatile memory no matter what the computer thinks it is). Getting 32GB of RAM wasn't a bad idea by any stretch (though you may be at risk if you have 32GB of DDR3 and someone brings out DDR4 so you now have 32GB of out of date RAM) but it does allow you to do fancy things (like a RAM drive) without eating into the RAM other programs use. And you'll be well set when writing things for 64-bit addressing becomes standard!
