Leveling Skills

I am very curious as to how certain skills level up. For some, it's blatantly obvious; potion skill increases relative to the value of the potion, illusion/most other magic school level up by the difficulty of the spell (sometimes in combat only), weapon and armor skills level up when used in combat. But there are some that don't make sense, such as enchanting and smithing. Focusing on those two for the moment, how do they level? Is it simply by quantity? By value? I've never seen any direct correlation between value and skill gain with either of these skills. Restoration and destruction confuse me to an extent too. Destruction I would figure it would be damage dealt, but I deal a LOT of damage with that (primary source of it) but it levels soooo slow. Restoration....maybe how much you heal? Is anyone able to shed some light onto this subject? Thanks, much appreciated!
