biggestkid
Hey guys new to the Elder Scrolls modding scene, and had a few noob questions. Im currently in the process of modeling some weapons and armour for skyrim, and was wondering what a good triangle limit is for a low poly weapon? Also for low poly armour? Also for environment meshes? Also for characters? (Just to make sure, Skyrim uses normal maps right?) Does skyrim make use of a 1st person and third person weapon view system? What i mean is is the first person model of a weapon higher poly then say if you were viewing it on an npc or something? Also what are good texture sizes to use for Skyrim? As you can see im a little overwhelmed by it all, but it shouldnt take too long to get the hang of it and get up and running. Thanks, big
ghosu
Hello Most people use as few polygons as possible, i started my models with a few hundred polygons up to max 2k BUT there are several ones around with up to 100k (like the flintlock pistol)...its just a high poly model using a seamless material texture and even this one runs without problems on my damn old computer (e6400,2GB Ram,HD5770). My current weapons use mostly 'bout 2-5k, my personal max is 'bout 10k and i never heard any complainments. Of course you can go along the codex as well and use as few polygons as possible and yes, it uses normal maps (NAME_n.dds), DDS is the texture format btw. ;) Weapons in general use 2 nif files / models...1stpersonNAME.nif for the player and NAME.nif for NPCs, afaik same polygon count...atm i'm only creating one nif file / model and set all paths to this one, no problems until now. Texture size...well afaik the original files mostly use 512, some 1024...HD texture pack 2048. I use 1024 most of the time, 512 for simple models. Depends on level of detail and performance. You can check out the video tutorial in my signature to get an idea 'bout it...some knowledge/techniques are overhauled, will mention them in a video addon but the general process is the same. greetings Edited April 12, 2012 by ghosu
