Runil quest: Dungeon Delving Darkshade Copse

So I got the quest to go to Darkshade for his journal and I believe through wiki that this quest is a random dungeon of several(?) I went there killed a few trolls but did not find a journal nor was I able to find a reference for this journal finding specific to Darkshade through a search. Anyone know if I didn't look at a particular spot or am I bugged? Thanks!

I got this same quest in my first playthrough (ten playthroughs, ago), so my memory might be a little faulty. As I recall, there was an extra chest in the cave that wasn't there in later playthroughs and the journal was in that chest. Maybe you just didn't look hard enough. It's easy to miss stuff in that cave because it's so cluttered and overgrown.

 

What you might try, assuming you're on a PC, you can try "movetoqt favor205" in the console. This should move you to the immediate vicinity of the journal.

 

If that doesn't work, then the radiant quest system (which is far from perfect) failed to place the journal in the game. In that case you can try "player.additem 705c3" to just give yourself the journal. The game should notice that it's appeared in your inventory and move the quest stage to 15. This will trigger a message to return the journal to Runil.

 

If you're not on a PC then revert to a save before you received this quest and get it, again.

I also got this quest but for some reason the door requires a key to open. i am getting the enemies on the other side of the door. they are dunedain warriors. am I bugged or is this normal? if this is normal where do i get the key? runil doesnt have any options for it.
