what do you need to look for when adding RAM?

Recommended Posts

yea. see when i bought this RAM, when i first planned on building this PC, i didnt do enough research. the PC i was going to build compared to the PC i have planned now are two different leagues, and this is maybe only ~$200-$300 more. so yea, if i didnt have this RAM sitting here, i most likely would choose a higher clocked RAM. but since i already have this RAM i cant just not use it. its what i gotta go with.

 If your still planning get a 7950 or 7970, I'm a big believer in those two cards now, I'm getting 60fps maxed out with custom textures and so on, Also with v.sync in Crysis 2, Without overclocking the card. Its still on its default clock speeds. Its insane.

Not to mention they run Cold, Especially the Gigabyte models.

i dont plan on going SLI. dont need to. im not worried about being able to play every game on super uber ultra with x493024 settings and whatnot. im fine with playing on high.

besides my budget wont allow it. by the time id be ready to buy a second card, new cards will be coming out, and at that point, i would just wait until my card can no longer handle games on high, then get two of the newest cards, which could be 2-3+ cards down the line.

While most ram with the same specs as made by a different company or a different product line (Ripjaw vs Sniper) will work together, Sometimes there are problems. It's best to get the same ram when upgrading. If you can't get the same brand, it's best to just replace the older ram at the same time to be sure.

I have added ram from a different brand, or different product line often when I couldn't get an exact match. Most of the time it does work as long as you are not overclocking it or changing some of the parameters. However, your mileage may vary.

I cam across this thread looking for similar information, so I wanted to provide some input.

I am running these in my current system without any problems:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231303

I picked up the CAS 7 from a friend who was parting out his machine and popped them in... my system defaulted the sticks to 9-9-9-24 and 1333Mhz (Motherboard/CPU restrictions) and 1.5v.

I found the answer to my question elsewhere and that was the differences between same spec Ripjaws and Sniper. Assuming same spec, the difference is only the heat spreader. So, they will also work together fine.
