Haha well this is the most creative way i've ever seen to create the whole thing :D

But this was a misunderstanding, when i was talking 'bout the spline as profile i was referring only to the blade, not the whole sword - like i show in my signature tutorial, each part an own loft nurb, melting them all in the end.

So this is the way i would recommend (just a random shape for demonstration purposes:

http://666kb.com/i/c31ldf3znbqwom3ky.jpghttp://666kb.com/i/c31lf9kn1ir56ltpe.jpg

1. Place all profile splines along the shape of the blade, left to right or right to left, don't mix up the order.

2. Put them all into a loft nurb.

3. Create cylinders, position them where you want holes, select them all and press C to transform them to editable bodies, all select - rightclick in object window and merge/combine+delete option (should be named something like that in your english version)

4. Add a boole, put int the cylinder group first and the loft nurb afterwards.

You can edit the loft nurb by clicking on it, in the right window below the object window...there are options to reduce the face/polygon count and so on.

If you want to convert the whole thing into one object select the loft nurb, press C, select the boole, press C, then select all objects in the object window, rightclick and merge/combine+delete option.

This works for sure, i just tried it on my computer.

greetings
