Game Crashes and turn a place "unreachable"

Hey, everyone!

I'm having an annoying problem. :psyduck:

I'm playing with a lot of mods and, sometime during the game, it will get slower and slower and crash. And if I've made a save state in the place it happens, I can't load it back, as it crashes to desktop when I try (it don't say the file is corrupted, through).

I think my description is kinda confusing, so I'll try to give an example with what is happening right now in my save game:

I'm in the Arrow of Extrification quest and went way down to where I find a door outside to the ocean (near the Giant Slaughterfish). When I entered it, the game crashed. I was able to load my game (at the ocean, outside the Grotto) and it was just fine, but whenever i tried to get back to the Bravil's Wizard Grotto, the game CTD. I've tried to go back via this submerse door and back again at the castle, to no avail.

So I loaded a quicksave a few minutes back, still inside the Grotto, and tried some other route. The game gradually got slower and slower, untill I tried another quicksave, which ended the same way (crashing to desktop).

When I open Oblivion back I can see the save is still there (and the picture shows me it was made where i tried to) but it won't load.

It happened the same in another save. I was playing a Dunmer and trying to up my Block skill just outside of Skingrad with a wolf when this happened.

I know this looks like an old bug that affected unpatched games, but mine is patched.

Any ideas? It's so annoying to play knowing that, sooner or later, your game will crash.

It won't help your current situation but quicksave is a known corrupter of save files. Either use save from the Esc menu or named saves via the console.

I doubt it will help your corrupted saves, but you could try the 'coc center' trick and see if it helps. Open the console (use the tilde (~) key right below the Esc key on standard keyboards) and type 'coc center' (without the quote marks) and then hit Enter. You'll be transported to an open plain with a few trees visible in the distance. Use the wait function to wait 72 hours plus a bit more (three full days and then a little longer). Open the console again and then 'coc weye' (or another location if you know the correct location code). Go back to your problem area and see if it's working (I tend to not use fast travel, especially when troubleshooting ... your mileage may differ).

Thanks for your reply!

I didn't knew that quicksaves corrupted files, but I don't think they are the problem in this matter.

Anyway, I'll try your solution right now, thanks again! :D

Ok, when I opened the game i remembered that all the saves with this problem wouldn't open. So I had to get back and use a backup of my quicksave. Did what you said, but the game still crashes to desktop a little later (now, inside the Mage's Lair). I've waited there for 78 hours, but I don't think it changed anything.

But I've seen that with this backup of my quicksave I was able to do more and that, inside the Saves folder there were some save files with an ".obse" extension. i thought that maybe it was thisd very file fault and deleted it, but it didn't changed anything.

So, I'm still kinda stuck.

If you look you'll notice that for each save with the .obse extension there's a corresponding save with the extension .ess (e.g. if you have a save named MySave.ess there will also be a save named MySave.obse). The reason for this is that Oblivion Script Extender (OBSE) stores information it needs in the smaller .obse save file. You shouldn't delete just the .obse file and then try to load the .ess file that goes with it. If you're deleting saves always do them in pairs (in other words delete both MySave.ess and MySave.obse).

Like I said I doubted that the 'coc center' trick would help, but it was worth a try. There's not much else I can think to try.

Yeah, I know. I've made a backup from the saves folder, so I just put it back and it's fine.

I think I'll just do some random dungeon exploring or a couple of quests for the Mages Guild and go back there, hoping that it will be fixed.
