importing into 3ds max trouble

Alright i've been trying to get my meshes into 3ds max for customization and im having trouble getting the correct file format in. i have nifskope 3ds max 2010 and fallout mod manager plus the ck. i've already made a copy file with all of my bsa meshes in it using mod manager. i open the file i want from there with nifskope and it loads all of the info. my problem is getting that file i have in nifskope into 3ds max for customizing. i've tried making a copy of the nif and exporting it from the save location. and i get "incompatible file format" in 3ds max. i've also tried clicking export from nifskope and it gives me an mlt and obj file of the mesh i opened. then i open 3ds max and find the file, click import and 3ds max says that there is no information to load? bottom line. need help getting files from nifskope into 3ds max and back after alteration.
