VictorianApocolypse
Hello to all, My name is Victor and I have a bit of a problem with the GECK. I've since created some very impressive mods, but the GECK has begun to crash on me whenever I save anything. A new file, a certain cell and all cause it to crash. The files load perfectly fine, excluding the odd cell crash, but I am unable to save as of yesterday. For modding I use a clean version of Fallout 3, no mods or replacements whatsoever. Any assistance would be appreciated, truly, I believe the public would like these mods...a great deal so. Sincerely, Victorian Apocalypse Also, please pardon my sarcastic manner. It's very agitating to work on something so carefully and delicately until you get it perfect and then...viola, GECK get's all hormonal. VictorianApocolypse
I take it this is one of those common problems that everyone knows the answer to but refuses to mention for fear of social and psychologically induced repercussions and a stamina of inadequacy? I wouldn't usually post again like this, but does anyone know what could cause saving in the GECK to make it crash?
arewesailingblind
Did you install the update for the GECK? I know that the steam version comes with the GECK installer located in the main game folder, but it needs the update installed. That's the way it was for me. The Beth website has the update file: http://geck.bethsoft.com/index.php/Main_Page Also, never try to save while the navmesh editor function is active, because saving while you have the navmesh editing functions are active causes a crash (usually.) If you're doing this, stop the navmesh editor function and then save. It would help to know what exactly you're doing usually just before it crashes too. General though, the GECK is very temperamental at times and buggy in certain areas. But once you know what causes it to crash, you work around it. Plus, always keep backups of your mod work. I make a backup once a day, and dump the backups into a folder outside of the DATA folder, on my computer's second hard drive, using a nameformat like: 2012-04-XXMyModName.ESP. With a proper backup system you can revert back to before something nasty happened/implementation mistake happened.
VictorianApocolypse
Thanks for the response! Well, I'm usually just saving the file. The rest is almost always alright, though on occassion it'll crash when importing a nif file. However this doesn't always happen for some reason. Most often the GECK crashes on me whilst I'm saving. Is it possible that my files are corrupt? Because sometimes the save works on other files, but eventually crashes once they become too large. Thanks for the advice by the way, I don't save with the navmesh window open :) Sincerely, Victor Edit: Oh and I did install the update, but it still crashes :) Edited May 3, 2012 by VictorianApocolypse
VictorianApocolypse
Nevermind, fixed it. Thanks for all the help!
caramellcube
It's possible that someone will have the same problem in the future and find this page on a search, in which case it might be usefull to add a note saying how you fixed it.
VictorianApocolypse
Oh, well all I did was change computers. The system on my laptop was wreaking havoc on the GECK's absurd resource requirements, so I moved it to my desktop and it works just fine (Excluding the corrupted files from the last install). If you have a similar problem then feel free to PM me, I actually don't mind helping people with fallout problems so long as they don't spam me. :) Edited May 31, 2012 by VictorianApocolypse
