MacSuibhne
Johnny-Newcome here... I have no magic skill except what I got at the beginning of the game. I do have some enchanted items and I have filled soul gems. If I have a staff that will trap souls and I disenchant it (can I at this level?), will the enchantment work to enchant, say, a steel sword? Does an an item have to be at full capacity to disenchant? If not, what happens to that magika?
fms1
Yes, you can disenchant any item at any skill level\ perks, the higher level enchanted items just give more experience towards leveling enchantment skill. Your enchanting level and perks along with level of filled soul gem determine the enchanted items power and charge. The item's charge has no effect on disenchanting an item. It gives you the same base enchantment. Edited May 1, 2012 by fms1
worldofscotty
You only learn the ability to add that spell to another item. The Magicka level of an item has no bearing and your skill level plus perks determine the strength of your own enchantment Yes the trap souls ability will go onto a sword. You can just save your game and then try stuff like this
MacSuibhne
Thanks to both of you. I work during the day...but I'm thinking about Skyrim  ...sometimes I don't even get to play for several days. Still thinking. Planning. Wondering. I read the UESP wiki about enchanting and didn't get clear answers to my question. Appreciate the patience. MacSuibhne
So...I disenchanted a dwarven battle axe that was a soul trap (the staff would not disenchant) but I'm kind of sorry I did. Although the battle axe had a 10 second 'harvest time" when I went to enchant my Skyforge steel sword, I was only going to get 4 seconds. So my questions are: 1) If I enchant the sword, can I boost or improve its open time later? 2) Will wearing a necklace or taking a potion that improves enchanting abilities give me more time? (I have a necklace or a potion...can't remember which...that gives a 10% boost.) How can I get more time on the sword? 3) Why won't the staff disenchant? tetradite
1) No, but you can just get another sword and another soul gem later when you have higher skill and get more time on that one. Enchanting this sword now will help you make more powerful enchantments later. 2) In theory yes, BUT 10% on 4 seconds = 4.4 seconds, or 4 seconds once you round it to a whole number :( Don't worry though, I never enchant soul trap at any longer than 1 second anyway, by choice - the more "time" you get the less hits you'll get before you need to recharge, and if you're killing the thing with the enchanted weapon then it tends to die precisely 0 seconds after impact. IMO it's actually pretty pointless getting a long "time" with soul trap as a weapon enchantment.

Lydia was killing a giant and I grabbed the staff and activated it just as it fell but nada. No joy. I had several open soul gems--a grand and a greater. sigh
fms1
For people it takes a black soul gem, so maybe a giant also, I never tried that. You can also use the Black Star
tetradite
Nah sorry, I have literally never even tried to use or disenchant a staff. Staffs got marked early on as one of my items to sell, I don't have a particularly magicky character and they're pretty high value, so staffs are basically just good loot to me at the minute. I would assume they're just part of a different system entirely, if you can't disenchant that one you probably can't disenchant any.
MacSuibhne
Digging around the UESP wiki I found this "small print" (not really...just missed it). "Staves cannot be disenchanted." FWIW.
