Terrible selection, Morrowind's was much better.

 

Whoever's idea it was to get rid of spears should be shot.

I agree spear and crossbows should have stayed in oblivion.

Absolutely! I was SHOCKED to see that the most basic, most culturally universal, and most enduring weapon in history was completely nonexistent in Oblivion.

And there's so much room for flavor with a spear: its just a shaft, and you can stick anything you want on the end. It can be a pointy stick or a dwarven lance, or it can have a dragon's tooth for the head, or a gemstone, or the bone of a saint--ANYTHING!

Think of the cultural variety in the spear: Samurai, Zulu warriors, crusaders, hoplites, jaguar warriors, Comanches & Texas rangers...

Excelent point, I wasn't shocked when I saw spears were gone I was downright pissed. I actually refused to play the game for a week because my most beloved character from Morrowind used spears. When I remade them and realized I couldn't get the spear of bitter mercy I turned off my Xbox 360 and played Morrowind for a week.

There should be a reason why spears are not present in the game, such as crossbows and quarterstaves...

 

Does anyone know why? what can it be, I mean there are 2 handed weapons, like battle axes and claymores but not spears...

What bugged my the most was how the weapons were wielded and swung. I dont think you would get very many hits from swinging a dagger. Stabbing would be more efficent. Also look how they wield warhammers and swing them. I tried it outside with a craftman's hammer and I nearly was dragged off my feet from the weight of the hammer. The hammer should be wielded horizontialy. Katanas were swung like claymores which was dissappointing.

 

There are mods that change the combat animation, but they are a little too dramatic for me. I was hoping for more dirty-style fighting.

This is a shocker! Sure a single headed axe does have a blunt and cutting side, but still...

 

Mmm flails... my favorite :cool: I have seen one mod for flails, which one day I will install, but am holding that one back as motivating myself to learn modding.

 

I miss the good old days of throwing spears from horseback.

Bethesda should have included sabers in the game, especially since the dialogue about sabers in Morrowind. I was quite disappointed when I found that the Imperial Legion horse back patrols did not have sabers. I have to give Bethesda credit for leaving in a few of the Akaviri style weapons, but they should have left in the tanto and wakazashi.

 

Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed that spears were left out. I also found that the removal of throwing knives, darts, crossbows, etc. made marksmanship slightly less desirable as a skill.

My character uses a bow only in game; other weapons maybe for screenies. And I have my companion Carah using Katars. Granted, one is used as a shield, and the offensive one swung like a sword, but the visual aspect is so much different than the run of the mill weapon.

i would have loved to see throwing knives in this.i would use those instead of a bow.and all i use is a modded two handed katana and a bow. i would use more but i don't like the selection of weapons in the game there should be alot more to choose from.
