Lisnpuppy
Ok... I had to reinstall Oblivion. I have Vista. I have reinstalled before without issues. Now it reinstalls and everything looks fine...but it will not start. It is completely clean w/o mods at this time. I looked in the data folder and it appears that the Oblivion main folders (meshes, textures, etc) are in 7Zip format. I can not unzip them. I have disabled the UAC and all that jazz. I have tried to install in an alternate folder...I have even tried to install it in my external drive. I can not figure out what the heck has happened and why it is doing this. I seem to remember that these folders should be accessable. Can ANYONE help me? PULEEZE! Thanks,Lisa

SoulReaver911
I'm running on vista with no problems, so it's not that. The Meshes and Texture folders aren't used as far as I know for vanilla Oblivion. So why they're there in the first place doesn't make much sense (unless it installs empty folders.) I'm going to be thorough in this next part, so if you're familiar with all this just check the short ones. 1: Remove your settings folder in Documents. That's an issue. You want Oblivion to make a new one. 2: Make sure you uninstalled everything related to Oblivion. For a more detailed write-up: 1: First things first. I justed reinstalled on vista, like 2 days ago, and I couldn't start up Oblivion. It would get to the loading screen and freeze. I then discovered that I neglected to move my old "Oblivion" folder in "/Documents/My Games/" and it turns out, that it was messing up the start up sequencing due to old mod intervention of the .ini file among other things. So try removing that folder and let it create a new one. After modding and patching oblivion back to where it was, replace the new Oblivion folder with the old. Again, I'm not referring to where you installed the game, but the My Games folder where the game installs all the settings in a folder labeled "Oblivion." 2: Another thing you might try if that's not working is completely uninstalling everything related to Oblivion on your computer. Firstly, uninstall vanilla correctly. Make sure you have the original disc loaded up in your drive (or however you're using the disc) and running the manual "setup.exe" on the disc. If it starts uninstalling the game, you know it's working right. If however it asks you to install (not uninstall) the game, something is not right with Oblivion's registry files, which is another whole deal by itself. Ok, after that's uninstalled, manually uninstall all Official mods (Knights of the Nine, and all those, including Fighters Stronghold but excluding Shivering Isles because for this one, it is unnecessary.) You can do this through your "Control Panel\Programs\Programs and Features" or start menu, control panel, and under Programs "Uninstall a program." They will be listed there (if you look under "Publisher") under Bethesda, so all those need to go. Uninstall anything unofficial mods that are there too, including "The Unofficial Oblivion Patch" by Quarn and Kivan Finally, after you gotten rid of all that, completely remove anything left from the original folder that oblivion was installed in (but don't delete the mods you want to keep, because those are easy enough to move back in.) After this go ahead and reinstall a fresh oblivion. Ok, if these solutions don't work, come back and post what happened. (Again, I know this is a little....detailed, and people who know how to do some of these things would be a little annoyed, but I'm trying to be thorough.) Palpenious
Can't find it now, but I remember the Oblivion readme saying something about problems if you uninstall/reinstall a few times. Especially if you have SI also. If I end up finding it, I will come back, but check your readme, or the actual manual if you still have it.
