Wookiee
just interested to see ppls views on this "invasion of privacy" or "pre-emtive soluton"pros and cons please, don't have to give your opinion if ya don't want to but please contribute. :)
wesaynothin
that all depedns. If you want no privacy, a lying government (no need to work on that though), and constant 'war' with other super countries, yeah, it sounds peachy.
Malchik
I think all my neighbours are looking at me oddly. They are out to get me! Someone told me they might have knives in their kitchens! I think I'd better go and shoot them all before they do something to me. I mean they can, can't they? Oooh - er!
Luxar
umm....What exactly is Big Brother? Are you talking about the TV show on Fox?(If so, i'm lmao).
Peregrine
*Pokes Luxar with Bayonet of Poking* Read 1984. Big Brother is the government that controls every bit of your life, "to help you". No freedom, no "harmful thoughts", etc.
Mojlnir
I assume that you are referring to the Patriot Act (ahhh...irony) and the climate of fear that permeates American society at the moment. I think the entire thing is a total abrogation of our Constitutional rights by the hate spewing hell spawn who occupy positions of power in the current administration. Americans have been convinced by powerful fear-mongers that having doubts about the actions of our government is tantamount to treason. People have been afraid to speak up and say that what is going is flat wrong and completely criminal. They started a war by LYING for God's sake!!! The election season has been good because people are starting to voice their opinions again, though the Administration and its lackey's have been trying to paint people as unpatriotic, pass blame on to news organizations and citizen's groups and generally attempt to cover their pustule-covered asses. The FBI and other agencies can check your library records, search your house without telling you and imprison you without reason while prohibiting you from knowing what you are being charged with or having access to a lawyer. Trials can (and have) been carried out in "secret" closed-door military tribunals where there is no appeal process and the "judges" can pass down a sentence of death. Do I think this is a good idea? F*** no! It pains me to see the constitution trod on in such a manner, and noone is really standing up against it. We're too scared and too complacent (I include myself here) to worry about it. If it doesn't happen to us, then why should we care? My right to say what I want, meet with whomever I want, worship whatever I want and express my feelings about the government in whatever manner I see fit* is being infringed upon by fanatically un-American "patriots" who want to remake the world into a corporate whorehouse. * as long as my actions do not infringe upon the rights of others...this point is absolutely CRITICAL to remember
Luxar
Can I get some links about this junk(patriot act? Is this something else for the book 1984)!? eep...I'm either a) out of the loop B ) sorely confused or c) examining a debate over a purely hypothetical situation. Any help here would be most appreciated.
Peregrine
You're an American and you don't know about it? Sadly it's not something out of that book. It's that act that gives the government massive power to invade your privacy... as long as they declare you a "possible terrorist" first. Search for it online, you'll find plenty of information about it.

I only hope that my government don't try to do something similar to the Patriot Act over here. As for a Big Brother-ish government being a 'pre-emptive solution', that is another way of saying 'we are going to punish you for crimes you might commit'. Ancalagon
Grah, I get shades of Minority Report every time I hear about the Patriot Act. That and 1984 whenever I see the TIA logo. Seriously though, if it ever comes to that I am hopping on the next Ship to Mars and starting something similar to good ol' 1776 over there. Hopefully, Earth will leave us the hell alone and trundle onwards to oblivion (or the same for the US if it continues down it's path).
