ikesmasher
I keep hearing different things about how to do custom music in skyrim. When it comes down to it, the CK is just buggy. But some places say i need to convert to XWM, and others say i can just use WAV. Can anyone please tell me a working way to add music into skyrim, without causing crashes and stuff? a link to a working tutorial or anything works too. NoAardvarksAllowed
If your game and CK are updated to 1.5, adding music is fairly straight-forward. With 1.4 it's harder, since there were a few bugs present that Beth fixed with the 1.5 patch. First you need to add a Music folder inside your Skyrim\Data folder, if you don't already have one. Then you add the music files you want in the game to it (or to any subfolders inside it). The engine will play music either as .wavs or as compressed .xwms. There are several xwm converters on the Nexus to make the conversion easy. In the CK, go to Object window>Audio>Music Track. That's where you create new tracks, called MUSTs. Just right-click in the object window and choose New in the pop-up menu. Give the track an unique ID and fiddle around with the settings (see more on them here http://www.creationkit.com/Music_Track). Usually you want Single Track as the Track Type. Then you click the Choose File button and navigate to the actual music file in your Data\Music folder, if the file is in the .wav format. If it is in .xwm format, you have to brute force the uncooperative CK a bit, because it will not show you your .xwms in the folder, but if you type the file name with the .xwm file extension (or paste the name), you can assign a .xwm file to the MUST. Be wary though, because sometimes the CK will try to make the .xwm file path into a .wav file path. If you for example typed in "XYZ.xwm" as the file path, the CK can change it into "XYZ.xwm.wav". That doesn't happen most of the time, however. Just double-check before saving the MUST. To get it to play in the game, either add it to an existing Audio>Music Type (=playlist) used by the game, or make a new one and define where or when you want it to play. You assign the type of music played in a location in the World>Cells and World>World spaces sections of the CK. More on Music Type here: http://www.creationkit.com/Music_Type. If you don't want to use the CK at all to get your music in the game, you can use the mod in my sig. It allows you to add up to 500 tracks in either the .wav or .xwm formats, by just putting them in the right place and renaming them.
