Howdy. I don't know you (I think) but welcome back.

I don't mod for SI or the DLCs because of the legal issues...it's a shame though.

Good luck and have fun.

There are legal issues with making addons for the expansions? I thought it was okay if you didn't include any of the DLC's content itself...

I've been told that there are some questions that shouldn't be asked. But in a nutshell, the grey area is when you make changes to any of the SI resources for use in your mod, like clothing, and armor retextures mostly. Technically there is no way to release those changes without giving people the models for them. Although the .esp may require SI, the models don't. At current, it's allowed since most of those mods which do this mention requiring SI, and those changes are usually significant enough to make it impossible for someone to recreate that content as it would be in SI. Although one could certainly make the argument that SI is much more than a few resources, and that people are more paying for the extra quests, storyline, and environment, and that anyone downloading mods with altered SI resources wouldn't be getting anything even close to what SI offers the issue still remains. It's not like the resources in the other DLC mods which are a fairly large portion of what that mod is.

But as is the case with this and things like Morroblivion, common sense and reasoning takes a back seat to the raw legallity of it. And if anyone really asks, all that is likely to happen is modders getting screwed over.

Technically, the same argument could be made about any mod which makes changes to even vanilla resources. Someone doesn't necessarily have to have bought Oblivion in order to download a mod, then use the mesh somewhere else. They can't re-upload what they're doing with it, but they can still use it. So the question is really more about intent when making the mod instead of what someone will do with the mod. It would be hard to imagine someone using modded content as an alternative for official content. It's only with the smaller DLC mods that anything close to this would even be practical.

Well, like I said, because of the legal issues (even the gray ones) I am not interested in modding DLCs or SI.

GStaff himself once told me something like this when I asked about certain legalities for modding DLC/SI:

"Don't upload your mod if it contains any resources from the DLCs or SI"

This is not a verbatim quote but it is the gist of it. It basically tells me that we can do texture replacers or add-on ESP files that change things but only if you use a de-isolation method rather than modifying and uploading the actual plugin.
