I have read several descriptions, of Atlantis and it's people, which are books by philosophers whose writings go as far back as 30 centuries ago. A good source to find that information is in the books supplied by the Britannica's collection called, The Great Conversation.

 

There are leads to the authors works who lived before, during, and after Atlantis was buried in mud. I believe the description in one of the great philosophers works helps to understand, Atlantis took a long time to become no longer safe to live in, when the author description says, "After many years the streets of Atlantis became filled with mud which made them difficult to navigate by boat anymore".

 

Venice, Italy has been slowly sinking, or as some say, the water is rising slowly, making it apparent that one day Venice will be under water, where silt and mud will bury it and will one day be lost too.
