Drela's Cottage Crash

Hi,

Recently I've noticed if I try to walk into the cell containing Drela's Cottage, Skyrim crashes. The game goes black and crashes to the desktop. This is the first time I've ever had a problem like this in Skyrim. I've been to Drela's Cottage earlier in the game as I remember killing Drela. I haven't installed any mods since then, and none of my mods should conflict with that area. I am not sure if it is significant or not but if I toggle the free cam I can go in and out of the cell without any problems. Any help on this would appreciated as I have tried everything I can think of besides re-installing.

After experimenting more with my problem I have found something out. It now appears to be less associated with Drela's Cottage than Eldersblood Peak. It appears that the crashing is associated with how close I get to Eldersblood Peak. Also on this note, I noticed these crashes after receiving the task from the Greybeards to locate a Word of Power on Eldersblood Peak. However if I load a save before I got this task my game still crashes.

you could do a screenshot of your plugins page.

TSo not many o mods! Have you run BOSS to make sure they are placed correctly?

I have heard of people having occasional odd crashes with ApachiSkyHair, but it seems unlikely if the crash is only at Drela's.

1. If you are using any mods that you have not updated since Skyrim 1.5, it is possible that is where the mod conflict is. Check your mods and update if necessary.

2. Run Boss and hand place any mods it does not recognize. (Make sure WATER is dead last)

3. If none of the below helps, you could try disabling mods one-by-one, starting with the texture and/or lighting mods.

4. Also seems unlikely but sound card issues can also cause odd CTDs. Probably not the cause for yours, but have you checked your sound card driver updates?

5. I've also heard people having problems with Crossfire, and that it's better to use one. However that is beyond my area of knowledge. Just guessing, I would imagine that a Crossfire problem would not be localised to only one spot.

If none of this helps, please post back.

Sigh...

updated mods: crash

disabled plugins: crash

uninstalled mods: crash

Fast travel around Skyrim (mostly high altitude locations): no crash

I don't even know where to begin on sound drivers. The sound chip is on the motherboard so I don't know what driver to look for. Plus windows says the sound driver is only about 2 years old, so I doubt it would be giving these sort of problems. Crossfire has gotten fairly reliable since January, and it shouldn't be causing a localized issue like this.

I will delete all my Skyrim content ( in the main game folder/don't want to delete the mods), re-install Skyrim from disk and NOT update it. If it works I'll update; works again then I'll add mods one at a time. If none of that works then I guess I'm in trouble. Thanks for your help.

Well, integrated sound cards have been noted to have problems and any driver not updated in 2 years is likely to need it, but my guess is that is not the issue here.

Before deleting everything (if it is not to late) have you tried going back to a save before you got the quest from the greybeards?
