Invitation / Request - Online Survey on knowledge/perception of Asberg

Hello,

I am currently taking an "Effective Speaking" class at my local university. We currently have an assignment where we will need to present a 15 minute speech about a topic selected for us, backed by different methods of research.

The topic that was selected for me was "Asperger's Syndrome - Some common knowledge & perceptions." One of the methods of gathering research I've chosen is to conduct a short online survey, with questions reflecting on peoples basic knowledge and perception of Asperger's syndrome.

So I would ask that you go to the survey I have setup and answer the questions as best as you can. there are only 13 questions, and the survey will only take a few minutes to do. It would be very helpful and I would appreciate it if you could do this.

Click here to take the survey now

The survey was created with eSurveysPro.com survey software.

Please note I have done what I can to protect your privacy - no information is being collected related to yourself (IP Address, e-mail, etc), nor are any personally identifying questions asked.

Thank you.

PS. Yes, I'm no word-smith when it comes to writing these kind of post's.

PPS. Spelling fixed

Happy to complete this. My little Cousin was diagnosed with Asberger's. He does well, but socially, he's quite the mess. He shows some remarkable intellect in certain subjects in school, and so far the medication they have him on has helped tremendously.

#7: Needs an option for "increased awareness of the disorder leading to more testing"

Part of the problem with Autism and similar disorders is that without proper training and long term observation it is hard to determine a real part of the disorder from a psychosomatic response (from being informed about symptoms) and just poor social skill development. Having had a childhood spent in mostly social isolation, my own abilities and comfort levels with physical contact were reasonably impacted to the point where I might reasonably be tested positive for a form of higher functioning autism. But this is the result of emotional abuse, not some genetic disorder. In both cases however the symptoms are similar, and just like with ADD testing, doctors and schools are more comfortable in premature classification than taking the chance that they might not identify an actual case. To my knowledge, none of these tests look for causes linked to other developmental disorders or environmental causes... Which is why nobody quite knows what causes various forms of Autism.

I was tested positive for Autism and I still don't believe it anymore then I believe I have ADHD (which somehow, I am also positive for. I could sit still for hours reading, yet I am obviously over-hyper)

Now, I was a bratty child, but my childhood was a complete disaster. Before any of that started, I would take small electronics apart and rebuild them (if mother is to be believed). However, my belief is that I just suffer from a rather severe case of a**hole-ism and so far, nothing proved me wrong yet.

I seen people suffering from real cases of autism, and I am all for supporting actual cases, but they need to stop handing out life-tme diagnosises like candy.

Just because some lacks social skill does not mean that there is something completely wrong with them and that their brain chemisty is all messed up.

Done.

My cousin has Autism, and a couple of my friends have Asbergers Syndrome. While they may sometimes be difficult to talk with, we sure do have some deep and intellectual conversations.

I'm sensing a (somewhat) double standard in your post. You first claim that you don't have ADHD, as you are not bouncing off the walls (a stereotype), and then you go on to say that just because someone lacks social skills, doesn't mean they have a brain chemistry issue (very true). A good friend of mine has ADHD, and he can sit still for hours reading. Sure he has lots of energy, but that doesn't necessarily mean anything, right?

I have been tested positive for ADD (which I believe I am), and I for one am thankful for it. While it is indeed possible that you have been misdiagnosed (which seems to happen an awful lot more these days), I don't think that they would immediately say that you have ADHD or Autism simply because you were a jerk as a child.

What I find most amusing is, around here, the supposed "rate" for ADD/ADHD kids is 5% of the population...... but, strangely enough, 30% of elementary school children are on drugs to treat ADD/ADHD..... neat huh?

In america, I think it's a disease in and of itself that folks believe any problem can be treated with the correct drug....... Just watch some of the commercials on TV... Your loved one can't sleep? DRUG 'EM!! Its ridiculous.

It just galls me that just because someone doesn't fit in with society rules, they must obviously be brain-damaged. That is what I been seeing more times then not. Mind you, I have seen actual cases of actual brain damage, and it is sad, but if a kid is being energetic, he must be ADD or ADHD because he is energetic...He is a young kid, they are supposed to be energetic.

Kid doesn't do good in school and doesn't concentrate, must be a brain problem. No, school is boring. Notice how he can concentrate just fine on games.

There was a commercial for some ADHD drug, I forget the name, that disgusted me. When the kid takes the pill, he practically became a slave. When I look back to when I was on the drug, that was exactly what I was - a zombie in every sense of the word. I lacked emotion, a sense of passion, of empathy, of happiness. I lost all that was good and kept the bad, but I couldn't do anything about it. I was trapped in a prison.

Now, three years later, do I finally understand how it felt and never again will I take another mind-control pill. Parents, stop using Concerta to control your kids! They seem to think it is a 'miracle' pill. Oh, my kid is so well behaved now with these pills.

I think I ranted enough and I apologize in advance if this offends anyone. This is part of that messy childhood mentioned above.

I see what you are getting at. However, you can't deny that ADD/ADHD is indeed a real thing, and not some sort of conspiracy. While it is true that health insurance can lead to moral hazards and a higher demand for treatment of the slightest ailment, that does not mean that doctors and parents are working to turn their children into mindless thralls. I could not focus in school (legitimately) nor could I focus on other things either. I think it's safe to say that I do indeed have a chemical deficit going on somewhere.

However, since this is not a debate thread, I will leave it there. Good luck with your class, OP!

lol no I can't deny it.

Also, sorry for bringing this thread off topic. This is a good cause and thanks for bringing it to our attention.
